Victor Wembanyama didn’t mind playing the villain Tuesday night in Oklahoma City.
“I heard one ‘(expletive) you’,” the Spurs All-Star said. “But just one, you know what I mean?”
After the Spurs won the first three matchups of the season against the vaunted Thunder, Wembanyama found himself persona non grata upon his return to the Paycom Center.
It comes with the territory of being the best player on one of Oklahoma City’s burgeoning rivals.
Wembanyama’s comments after the Spurs’ recent run of victories — including the infamous, cryptic one about “ethical basketball” — seem to have enraged the OKC faithful further.
Thunder fans booed Wembanyama at every opportunity Tuesday, then got the last word when their team at last broke through against the Spurs with a raucous 119-98 victory.
It was the Spurs’ most lopsided loss of the season. It was also the most lopsided decision in a season series that included a 20-point Spurs victory at OKC on Christmas Day.
“I don’t think they changed too many things (from the first three meetings),” Wembanyama said of the Thunder. “They trusted their own identity.”
No stranger to hostile environments from his time in the Euroleague, Wembanyama said he was motivated by the Oklahoma City crowd’s jeers.
“I think this is what makes us better,” said Wembanyama, who had a modest 17 points and seven rebounds. “Obviously way more than a team that would ignore me.”
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said he is proud of how the 22-year-old Wembanyama is learning to take every team — and every crowd’s — best shot in the NBA.
“He’s old school, the type that I don’t think he puts too much stock in a rivalry,” Johnson said. “I don’t think he’s overly friendly with anybody. I think he keeps it right where it’s supposed to be. Whatever happens organically will happen, and I don’t think it’ll move him much.”
Wembanyama swears he’s seen worse than Tuesday’s lion’s den in Oklahoma City.
As far as belligerent crowds go, Wembanyama said, Oklahoma City’s had nothing on that of Panathinaikos, the Greek club he believes to have the most frightening fan base in Europe.
“When you talk about hostile, I don’t think anything is more hostile than that,” Wembanyama said.
