OKLAHOMA CITY — Score one for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 34 points and Jalen Williams added 20 as the Thunder humbled the Spurs 119-98 on Tuesday at the Paycom Center.

For the defending NBA champions, it marked the first victory in the series this season after the Spurs won the first three meetings.

The Spurs hung with the Thunder for a half, trailing by five heading into intermission.

Led by Gilgeous-Alexander and Williams, OKC outscored the Spurs 40-24 in the third quarter to take control. The two Thunder All-Stars combined for 25 points in the frame, which included separate runs of 11-0 and 12-0 from Oklahoma City.

In a way, the Thunder accomplished what most of the world expected when the teams first met Dec. 13 at the NBA Cup semifinals in Las Vegas.

And again in a Dec. 23 meeting in San Antonio. And again in an overheated, overhyped Christmas Day showdown in OKC.

The Spurs won all three of those matchups, instantly raising the bar of expectations for their season.

In a battle between the top two teams in the Western Conference standings, it was high time Tuesday for OKC to break through against the plucky Spurs.

Stephon Castle broke a recent slump with 20 points and eight assists, while Victor Wembanyama added 17 points and seven rebounds in defeat.

The victory was the most lopsided in a season series that included a 20-point win for the Spurs on Christmas Day.

The Spurs lost for the fourth time in six games. The Thunder won their fourth straight.

Here are three takeaways from Tuesday’s defeat, which dropped the Spurs to 27-13:

1. Wemby plays the part of OKC’s villain

Few visiting players outside of OKC expatriate Kevin Durant are as reviled by Thunder fans as Wembanyama.

It comes with the territory of being the best player on one of Oklahoma City’s burgeoning rivals.

Wembanyama’s comments after the Spurs’ recent run of victories — including the infamous, cryptic one about “ethical basketball” — seem to have enraged the OKC faithful further.

They booed Wembanyama at every opportunity Tuesday.

Making his first start of the season against the Thunder — Wembanyama came off the bench in the first three meetings — the Spurs All-Star got off to a hot start Tuesday.

He got on the board with a lefty dunk over not-quite-rival Chet Holmgren in the opening minute, and caught an alley-oop lob from Castle a few possessions later.

The denizens of the Paycom Center did not like that. They liked better the moments when Wembanyama missed a jumper, or committed a foul or the two occasions in which he was called for highlight-reel goaltending violations.

“I think as long as I’ve been around Victor, he’s proven he’s pretty comfortable in his own skin,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “I think he embraces all of it, without putting too much energy (into it) or overdoing it.”

2. Fox can’t recreate Christmas magic

De’Aaron Fox lit up Oklahoma City in the team’s most recent meeting, scoring 29 points in his Christmas Day debut.

Fox’s box score did not quite reflect the lump of coal he delivered Tuesday.

He finished with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, but did much of his damage after the game was well out of reach.

It wasn’t necessarily an out-of-place performance for Fox, who has been struggling like a lot of Spurs players for the past few weeks.

In the nine games since the Spurs’ Dec. 25 victory over the Thunder heading into Tuesday, Fox has averaged 17.6 points.

His shooting percentages, however, have been lackluster — 41.8 from the field and a team-worst 15.1 from 3-point range in that span.

Fox didn’t do much to change the music Tuesday.

The Spurs need him to regain his All-Star form as they look to regain traction on their season.

3. SGA was predictably spectacular

Gilgeous-Alexander kept up one of the league’s more remarkable active streaks, eclipsing 20 points in his 110th consecutive game.

That is the second-longest streak in league history behind Wilt Chamberlain’s 126 in a row — a number that suddenly doesn’t seem so far out of reach for the OKC All-Star.

Gilgeous-Alexander made another 20-point outing a mere formality by scoring 13 points in the first quarter. He reached that mark with 7:51 to play in the third quarter after finishing a bucket-and-foul combination on Fox.
