No more Sixth Man of the Year talk for Spurs’ Wembanyama

OKLAHOMA CITY – Look who is back in the Spurs’ starting lineup, and just in time for another hotly anticipated showdown with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Victor Wembanyama made his return to the Spurs’ starting five Sunday in Minnesota, scoring 29 points with seven rebounds and three steals in 27 minutes of a 104-103 defeat.

“It felt good,” Wembanyama said of his first start of 2026. “It helps set the tone.”

Wembanyama had not started a game since New Year’s Eve, when he suffered a left knee bone bruise in the fourth quarter of a Spurs victory over the New York Knicks. He had come off the bench in three games since his return. Now that he is back in the starting lineup, Wembanyama hopes to stay there for good.

“It’s good because it gives me an opportunity to set a standard,” Wembanyama said of his starting gig.

Now that Wembanyama’s minutes limit has ticked up into the high 20s, coach Mitch Johnson said it makes more sense to return Wembanyama to his place in the starting lineup.

“That’s right where you get to the point where you can start and finish the game where you’re not getting too cute (with rotations),” Johnson said.

Wembanyama is expected to remain a starter as the Spurs travel to Oklahoma City on Tuesday for a fourth meeting this season with the defending champion Thunder. The Spurs have won all three matchups so far.

Wembanyama’s return to the starting lineup provided immediate dividends against the Timberwolves, especially on the defensive end.

The Spurs opened Sunday’s game on a 16-0 run, with Minnesota missing its first eight shots.

When Wembanyama went to the bench for his first breather at the 8:02 mark, the Timberwolves were still scoreless. They did not get on the board until an Anthony Edwards jumper with 7:22 remaining in the first quarter.

It took until the second quarter for the Wolves to record their first points with Wembanyama on the floor. Donte DiVincenzo broke that drought with a high-arching floater over the 7-foot-4 Wembanyama with 10:38 left in the second quarter.

“It’s been a challenge for him just navigating injuries this year,” Spurs forward Harrison Barnes said of Wembanyama. “I thought he did a great job of just continuing to be aggressive, continuing to trust himself and just go out there and make plays.”

The Spurs’ hot start could only carry them so far against the Timberwolves. Despite leading 85-71 headed to the fourth quarter, the Spurs sputtered in the final frame.

Anthony Edwards gave Minnesota its first lead of the night on a tie-breaking jumper with 2:19 to play, then banked a game-winning floater off the glass with 16.8 seconds remaining.

“It was our game for sure,” Wembanyama said. “I think sometimes we lost track of what we should have kept doing. There were some stretches where we just gave them too much freedom.”

Champagnie’s double-double binge continues

Spurs forward Julian Champagnie scored 14 points and 13 rebounds Sunday for his second consecutive double-double, his third in January and sixth of the season.

Coming into the season, the fourth-year pro had logged one career double-double.

“He’s been phenomenal in the sense of his rebounding has been excellent,” Johnson said. “His team defense has been mostly very good. He’s landed in a place of being very comfortable and content in terms of where his shots can come from and how to play. He’s one of those guys that when we play the right way, it typically produces pretty good opportunities for him.”

Champagnie is tied with Stephon Castle for second on the Spurs’ double-double leaderboard behind Wembanyama’s 15.
