De’Aaron Fox #4 of the San Antonio Spurs goes up for a shot against Wendell Carter Jr. #34 of the Orlando Magic during the second quarter at Kia Center on December 03, 2025 in Orlando, Florida.

The Spurs played Saturday’s loss against Utah without point guard De’Aaron Fox, who was sidelined with left adductor tightness.

Coach Mitch Johnson was optimistic the injury would keep the team’s second-leading scorer sidelined for only a short amount of time.

“Not too many big concerns,” Johnson said of Fox’s ailment. “Obviously he’s out, so it’s real. But hopefully it will be short term.”

Julian Champagnie made a spot start in Fox’s absence against the Jazz, but it wasn’t enough to shake the fourth-year forward out of a shooting slump.

Champagnie ended with four points on 2-of-10 shooting and missed all six of his 3-point tries.

The 24-year-old Champagnie has been Johnson’s first choice for fill-in starter when a perimeter player in injured. He has made 18 starts this season under those circumstances.

“It’s really hard, jumping from starting to the bench and back and forth,” Johnson said. “He is a versatile piece for us that fits with a lot of lineups, so that’s why he’s been chosen to do that.”

In the event of an injury to a starter, Johnson — like his predecessor, Gregg Popovich — has been cognizant of keeping bench roles as intact as possible.

It is a reason Johnson opted to start Champagnie against the Jazz instead of rookie sensation Dylan Harper.

“It goes a long way for players to expect if they’re going to play, when they’re going to play, when do they come out,” Johnson said. “They are creatures of habit from when they wake up to when they go to bed. I think being able to help provide consistency where you can (is important). You don’t want to just throwing people in there, especially with a team that hasn’t had a lot of continuity and time together.”
