OKLAHOMA CITY – Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox has been quick to credit his teammates for what he calls the “most efficient year” of his career.
“Playing with all these guys, Dylan (Harper), Steph (Castle), Vic (Wembanyama), it makes the game easier for me,” Fox said recently.
Fueled by a fast start largely of his own making in his Christmas Day debut, Fox scored 21 of his 29 points in the first half to spark the Spurs to a 117-102 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday afternoon in a battle between the West’s top two teams.
“I thought he was locked in from the get-go,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “He carried us through stretches of the game where it got a little shaky, and he’s probably one of the few guys on our team that’s played in an environment like this. He was just a steady hand when we need it the most, when we needed a bucket.”
Fox’s points before halftime were the most he’s scored in any first half as a Spur. He joined the team last season in a three-team trade after eight-plus seasons with Sacramento.
It was a simple formula in the first half: Fox easily got to his spots against the NBA’s top defense, his teammates found him, and he knocked down the shots.
“This being my first Christmas game, I just wanted to have a good game and come out with a win,” Fox said. “We did that, and we did it from the jump outside of the first couple of possessions. I think we were really good throughout the course of the game.”
In winning their eighth game in a row – the club’s longest since winning nine straight in February and March 2019 – and handing the Thunder their first loss at home this season in 15 games, the Spurs (23-7) improved to 3-0 against the defending NBA champions after also besting them 111-109 on Dec. 13 in the NBA Cup semifinals in Las Vegas and 130-110 Tuesday in San Antonio.
“The guys are working their butts off and they’re trying to execute the game plan,” Johnson said.
Wembanyama had 19 points and 11 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season in 26 minutes off the bench, and Castle had 19 points for the Spurs, who improved to 6-7 on Christmas Day after recording their first win on the holiday since 2016. Harrison Barnes and Harper chipped in with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Johnson reiterated before the game that the club is determined to stick with its recovery plan for Wembanyama, who has been under a minutes restriction and has yet to start in the seven games he’s appeared in since missing 12 in a row with a left calf strain. Those seven outings includes the NBA Cup championship game against New York that did not count in the standings.
“I don’t know when it becomes unrestricted, but his minutes will be mindful for dot, dot, dot,” Johnson said. “There’s nothing that’s going to make us flinch or change on that. If this game goes into triple overtime, he will not be in the game. There’s no circumstances that will allow us to get outside of ourselves with that regard.”
Johnson also stressed the organization and Wembanyama are in agreement that its in his best interest to stick to the plan
“Again, the emotions, the excitement, the circumstances of being in a Cup game, playing on Christmas, playing a big-time team, having a couple wins in a row, none of that is going to allow us or dictate to us in terms of the big picture of what we want for that young man and for this team,” Johnson said. “And so when you look at the injury and what history tells us in terms of being mindful of bringing a guy, a player back from that, and you look at his unique anatomy and all the things we want to accomplish, not today, not this year, but years to come, there’s nothing worth sacrificing or risking his long-term health and his long-term growth.”
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 22 points for the Thunder, who fell to 26-5 after starting the season 24-1. Oklahoma City hit just 11 of 44 (25%) from 3-point range (Alex Caruso missed 10 of 12) and the Thunder shot just 68% from the foul line (17 of 23).
Fox finished 12 of 19 from the floor and 3 of 4 from 3-point range. He scored 13 points on 5 of 6 and 3 of 3 in the first quarter, which ended with the Spurs up 41-36 after they trailed by eight.
The Spurs led 69-60 at halftime after leading by as many as 14 points in the second period, a lead they extended to 17 points in the third quarter. Fox hit 9 of 11 in the first half, including 9 of 14 from distance.
Underscoring how hot and in control Fox was, he sank a short jumper inside the paint with about nine minutes left in the third period after recovered the ball in mid-air after the Thunder stripped it from him during a drive into the lane.
Castle had seven assists to go along with his 19 points. He also helped hold Gilgeous-Alexander well below his per-game average of 32.5 points.
“He’s a really good player,” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said of the 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year before the game. “He’s a two-end player. He’s a really good driver. He’s got a good feel as a playmaker. He’s physical, so he can play in all the games. And then defensively, he’s got obviously great physical strength and great will, but he’s also pretty fundamental for a young player. He’s not out of position very often. He’s pretty disciplined and does a really nice job as the whole team does. We have a lot of respect.”
