By Jacob Douglas | Pounding The Rock (PtR), 2025-12-21 08:00:00

Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs vs. Washington Wizards

The San Antonio Spurs’ winter marathon continues with another matchup with the Washington Wizards on Sunday night. After a dominant 126-98 win against the Atlanta Hawks, the Spurs will travel to the nation’s capital for their second game against the Wiz in four days.

The Spurs last beat the Wizards in San Antonio on December 18th. They had a slow start in that game, but blew the doors off in the second half for a 119-94 victory. San Antonio’s defense was loose in the first half, but tightened up later on, allowing just 41 points after halftime. The Spurs rode that defensive momentum into Atlanta, where they shut down the Hawks in every aspect of the game.

The Wizards will be on the second game of a back-to-back and coming off a comeback win against the Memphis Grizzlies. Kyshawn George, who played well against the Spurs, led the Wizards with 28 points. San Antonio will be the favorite against Washington, and it’s a game they should win. But the Wizards just proved that they can compete on any given night, especially if their opponents aren’t ready. San Antonio will need to take care of business in Washington before a tough double-header against the Oklahoma City Thunder later this week.

What to watch for:

Defense continues to lock in

San Antonio’s defense has been elite since the NBA Cup. They’ve held opponents under 100 points in two straight games. Against the Hawks, they held Atlanta to 40% shooting from the field and stole the ball 11 times. The Wizards are equally turnover-prone and lack the offensive firepower to test the Spurs when they are playing at their best. A good defensive effort should be enough to seal another victory on Sunday night.

Wembanyama’s minutes

After playing under 20 minutes against the Wizards, Victor Wembanyama played 21 minutes in the second game of a back-to-back. He dominated with 26 points and 12 rebounds in his short stint. Watch how the Spurs staff handles his workload this week. He now has 4 games under his belt since returning from injury. It seems like this game, or the next two, will be the time we see Wembanyama’s minutes start to increase. Perhaps not to the usual playing time he’d have had pre-injury, but somewhere in the 23-26 minute range.

Which guard breaks out?

It seems like San Antonio’s guards are taking turns having strong performances. Stephon Castle has been the most consistent lately, but Devin Vassell and Dylan Harper have had big games, too. Harper was great against the Wizards last week, scoring a career-high 24 points. He’ll have a chance to replicate that performance on Sunday. De’Aaron Fox has taken somewhat of a back seat in the last few games. Don’t expect him to be quiet for long. Sunday would be a great opportunity for him to have an offensive explosion before the double-header with OKC.
