LAS VEGAS — Victor Wembanyama will come off the bench again when the Spurs face the New York Knicks on Tuesday night in the NBA Cup final, coach Mitch Johnson said.
“It’ll look a lot like last game,” Johnson said in his pre-game session with reporters.
Wembanyama, restricted to 20 minutes by the team’s medical staff after missing 12 games with a calf injury, logged 21 minutes after entering the game at the start of the second period in Saturday’s 111-109 win over Oklahoma City in the semifinals.
The strategy of keeping the All-Star center on the bench for the entire first quarter allowed him to play nine minutes in the fourth period, when he scored 15 of his 22 points.
Knicks coach Mike Brown said the Spurs limiting Wembanyama’s minutes again won’t change the Knicks’ game plan in terms of how they match up with Wembanyama.
“We just play who we think should be out on the floor,” Brown said.
Asked if he has received any tips regarding how to defend Wembanyama from his French national teammate, Knicks forward Guerschon Yabusele, Brown said, “I think his intel is the same as anyone playing Wemby — the night before you go to church, get down on your knees and say a prayer to the good Lord.”
