Victor Wembanyama thrills in return as Spurs shock Thunder to reach NBA Cup final

LAS VEGAS — Before his first game in nearly a month, Victor Wembanyama knew the San Antonio Spurs had set his minutes limit at about 20.

He and his teammates sure made the most of that time, on the biggest stage they’ve shared so far.

Coming off the bench for the first time in his NBA career, Wembanyama made a difference as large as his towering 7-foot-4 frame, leading the Spurs to an upset victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Cup semifinals 111-109.

Wembanyama scored 15 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter, prompting some fans inside T-Mobile Arena to chant “M-V-P!”

The Spurs posted a 9-3 record in the 12 games he missed with a calf strain, and on Saturday night, with the face of their franchise back in action, they interrupted one of the most impressive early season runs in league history: The Spurs snapped the Thunder’s 16-game winning streak.

“It’s just incredible,” Wembanyama said. “I keep asking these guys for the last 12 games, ‘just get better, do some beautiful things.’ And I just wanted to be a part of it. I’m glad that we can still do it when I’m here, I’m happy with that, of course. But I’m just glad to be a part of something that’s growing to be so beautiful. So pure and ethical basketball.”

In addition to his 22 points, Wembanyama finished with nine rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said he essentially divided the game into two segments: the 12 minutes of the first quarter in which Wembanyama would remain on the bench and the 36 minutes over the final three quarters in which Wembanyama would play in relatively short stints and receive frequent rests.

The plan worked perfectly. Wembanyama caught a second wind and played his best in the fourth quarter.

The Spurs (18-7) advanced to the NBA Cup championship game Tuesday night against the New York Knicks (18-7). The Knicks defeated the Orlando Magic 132-120 in the earlier semifinal Saturday.

San Antonio outscored the Thunder by 21 points during Wembanyama’s 20:39 of playing time. In the other 27 minutes, 21 seconds, the Spurs were outscored by 19 points.

“He’s been itching to play,” Spurs point guard De’Aaron Fox said. “Then coming back to a game like this, in a game of this magnitude, against a team like that, I think that’s probably the toughest first game that you can have of anyone in this league.

“But he rose to the occasion, and I don’t think anybody in the locker room or probably out here … thought that he wouldn’t. He was out there, he did what he does. He affected the game from the moment that he stepped on the floor, both offensively and defensively, and we felt that, and that’s ultimately the reason that we came out on top tonight.”

Wembanyama’s return felt like a long time coming, even though he was gone for only one month: He suffered a left calf strain on Nov. 14 in a defeat that dropped San Antonio’s record to 8-4.

But fortunately for San Antonio, some reinforcements were on the way. On Nov. 8, Fox made his regular-season debut, returning from a right hamstring strain that prevented him from playing in the team’s first eight games. Fox performed superbly during Wembanyama’s absence, averaging 25.2 points on 48 percent shooting from the field and 41 percent shooting from deep, and adding 6.5 assists per game.

With Fox leading the way, as well as contributions from up and down the roster, the young San Antonio roster built confidence. If the Spurs could play that well without their superstar — the player whom so many of their peers regard as the future face of the NBA — what could they accomplish when he ultimately returned?

Now they and the Thunder and the rest of the NBA have an idea.

And they did it on a large stage.

“This (was) not a typical regular-season game, because we know that if we lose, we’re out,” Wembanyama said. “Some people are built for these moments, some aren’t. But we definitely are, and it shows, because it’s not against (just) anybody that we won that game. So it’s just, again, I feel lucky. I’m glad we have this group, because everybody buys into this and everybody is built for these moments.”
