ORLANDO, Fla. — De’Aaron Fox scored San Antonio’s final 10 points, knocking down the winning free throws with 1.4 seconds remaining as the Spurs fought off a late rally to win 114-112 against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday at the Kia Center.

San Antonio’s lead, which was as large as 15 points during the second half, evaporated down the stretch, with Orlando drawing even for the first time since the second quarter when Franz Wagner knocked down three free throws with 7.7 seconds to play.

Fox drew a foul in the closing seconds on an off-balance jumper from the elbow, and after he made both free throws, Luke Kornet emphatically blocked a layup attempt by Wagner at the buzzer, sealing the Spurs’ victory.

“Being able to win games coming down to the final possession like that, it’s obviously a great feeling to come out on the other end,” Kornet said. “It was great to be able to get that win and keep chugging along.”

Fox finished with a game-high 31 points on 11-of-20 shooting, including 3 of 7 from 3-point range. He connected on a pair of 3-pointers in the final 3½ minutes, then added two free throws with 26 seconds to play before hitting the winning foul shots in the closing seconds.

San Antonio (15-6) picked up a road victory against a team with a winning record for only the second time this season, moving to 2-4 in those matchups.

Orlando (13-9) dropped to 7-3 since Paolo Banchero went out to injury, snapping a six-game home winning streak. San Antonio improved to 7-2 without injured star Victor Wembanyama, standing 6-2 without both Wembanyama and guard Stephon Castle.

“We could’ve easily come in here on the second half of a back-to-back, getting in at 4 a.m., and just lost this game,” Fox said. “It definitely shows how resilient this team is, and we’re continuing to try to build and try to move forward.”

Three takeaways from San Antonio’s road upset Wednesday:

1. Spurs dip deep into bench early and often

San Antonio looked to combat weary legs by dipping deep into the bench early, using 10 players for at least 4½ minutes in the first quarter alone.

Lindy Waters III marked the 11th Spurs player to enter the game when he came off the bench to start the second quarter.

Wednesday’s game was the second half of a back-to-back and the first leg of a four-game road swing. The Spurs will have played eight of nine games on the road by the end of the stretch.

Six San Antonio players scored in double figures Wednesday, and nine played at least 13 minutes.

“I thought our guys did a good job of weathering the storm, because we knew Orlando is a really good basketball team,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “They’re a tough team, and it was going to be a 48-minute game.”

2. San Antonio switches up defense

The Spurs turned to a little-used zone defense for stretches of Wednesday’s game and found moments of success, holding the Magic to 45% shooting and a 32.1% mark from 3-point range.

The defensive look offered San Antonio another way to conserve stamina and seemed to fit against a physical Orlando team not known for its perimeter shooting.

With Wembanyama sitting out a ninth straight game due to a left calf strain, the zone also helped the Spurs mitigate their lack of size. Aside from 7-foot-1 center Kornet, who played 28 minutes, the tallest player in the Spurs’ rotation Wednesday was 6-foot-8.

“I thought just changing up the look,” Johnson said of the move to zone. “I thought there were a couple times for us we had some groups that we felt like executed our zone defense pretty good, and they did a great job. Sometimes, it’s like on offense, you ride a hot hand. You get a couple stops, and you don’t need to change it if it’s not broken. So, we just stayed with it.”

3. Turnover bug comes back to bite San Antonio

Entering Wednesday night, the Spurs had become one of the best teams in the league at avoiding turnovers, averaging an NBA-low 11.1 turnovers per game since Nov. 14 — when Wembanyama and Castle last played together.

That effort peaked in Tuesday’s win against Memphis, as San Antonio posted a new season low with just six turnovers. But against the Magic, the Spurs matched that total by the end of the first quarter, looking more like the group that ranked 26th in the league with an average of 16.9 turnovers through the first 12 games of the season.

San Antonio finished the game against Orlando with 19 turnovers, as Fox committed seven while Harper added five.
