3 takeaways as Harrison Barnes goes off in win over Grizzlies

San Antonio Spurs forward Harrison Barnes (40) shoots a fall away jump shot during the first half of an NBA game with the Memphis Grizzlies in San Antonio, Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025. San Antonio beat Memphis 126-119.
The Spurs made the most of their all-too-brief homecoming Tuesday, outlasting Memphis in another fourth-quarter slugfest to win 126-119 at the Frost Bank Center.
Harrison Barnes pumped in a season-high 31 points while De’Aaron Fox scored 29 as the Spurs won in what could wind up being their only home game in the span of 27 days.
The Spurs headed into Tuesday not-so-fresh off a four-game road trip. After the victory, the team proceeded directly to San Antonio International Airport, where a charter flight awaited to whisk them to Wednesday’s back-to-back finisher at Orlando.
The Spurs were not expected to arrive at their team hotel in central Florida until close to 2:30 a.m.
That made Tuesday’s Frost Bank Center cameo all the more important to win.
With Fox and Barnes leading the way, the Spurs made sure they did.
Zach Edey, Memphis’ 7-foot-3 monstrosity of a center, scored 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Pat Spencer added 21 points off the bench for the Grizzlies, who also benefited from 20 points by Jaylen Wells.
The Spurs’ next schedule home game is Dec. 17 against Washington, though the date of that contest could be modified by the outcome of the NBA Emirates Cup tournament that resumes next week.
Here are three takeaways from Tuesday’s win, which improved the Spurs to 9-0 against teams below .500 and 14-6 overall:
1. Boosted by a Barnes bounce-back
Barnes was coming off his worst game of the month Sunday at Minnesota, when he accounted for five points on 2-of-8 shooting in the Spurs’ 125-112 defeat.
It was a rare hiccup in what has been a spectacular season for the 14-year veteran.
Barnes finished with his highest-scoring night in a Spurs uniform, and his first 30-point game since he went for 39 with Sacramento against Golden State on Jan. 25, 2024.
The 33-year-old Barnes started hot and stayed there, hitting the Spurs’ first bucket of the game on an off-balance 3-pointer from the top of the key.
He finished 10-of-20 from the floor and made a season-best seven 3-pointers on 12 attempts.
2. Foul trouble sinks Memphis big men
Edey was a load for Memphis. Jaren Jackson Jr was no picnic either.
The game turned for good in the fourth quarter when both Grizzlies big men had to sit with foul trouble.
With those two in the game, the Memphis paint was more or less off limits to the Spurs. As soon as they went to the bench, it became a Dylan Harper layup parade in the Spurs’ favor.
The Spurs were down by seven points when Edey picked up his fifth foul with 6:58 to go. By the time Edey checked back in 1:53 later, the Spurs were ahead by two.
Memphis couldn’t keep Harper and Keldon Johnson away from the paint in that span.
Special kudos goes to Spurs center Luke Kornet, who in the past two weeks has logged 49 minutes against the Grizzlies, a great number of them spent being elbowed in the face by Edey.
Kornet battled Tuesday, and ended with two points, six rebounds, four assists and five blocks in addition to several floor burns and bruises.

3. Jeremy Sochan has best game in weeks
Give it up for Jeremy Sochan.
The fourth-year forward appeared in danger of falling out of the Spurs’ rotation on the four-game road trip. In the win over Portland on Wednesday, Sochan didn’t get off the bench at all.
He showed up in a big way against the Grizzlies..
It was one of those throwback Sochan games, full of hustle plays and defensive agitation.
A dip-in for a basket here. A tap-out of an offensive rebound there. A tip-in of a Carter Bryant missed 3-pointer. A textbook two-on-one fast break opportunity he finished off a lob pass from Devin Vassell.
And of course, there were the traditional Sochan shenanigans.
In the first half, Sochan got tangled in a loose ball tussle with Edey, each player giving the other a few extra shoves. Officials tabbed Edey with the foul, which came into play later when the Grizzlies’ center picked up his fifth.
Sochan finished with 11 points, six rebounds and a pair of steals in 18 minutes off the bench.
For the Spurs, it was good to see their top havoc-wreaker wreaking havoc again.
