3 takeaways as David Jones Garcia sparks Spurs to win over Hawks

San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper (2) and San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox (4) embrace San Antonio Spurs forward David Jones Garcia (25) after their 135-126 victory over the Atlanta Hawks at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025.
Another game without Victor Wembanyama, another win for the Spurs.
De’Aaron Fox scored 26 points with nine assists and Keldon Johnson added 25 points off the bench Thursday as the Spurs pulled off a 135-126 victory at the Frost Bank Center.
It was the Spurs’ third consecutive victory since Wembanyama went on the injured list with a calf strain, and second straight since Stephon Castle joined him there with a hip flexor strain.
Julian Champagnie chipped in 20 points, giving the Spurs three players with at least that many.
The Spurs survived a night in which the Hawks shot 57% from the floor and 54.1% from the 3-point line, and got a season-best 38 points from Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
The Hawks played their 12th consecutive game without injured Trae Young, falling to 9-7 overall and 8-4 in games in which the All-Star guard does not play.
As has often been the case of late, the Spurs built a 19-point lead only to see Atlanta rally. The Hawks took a one-point lead on an Alexander-Walker basket with 9:19 to play, but Fox, Champagnie and — in a bit of an upset — rookie guard David Jones Garcia took over from there for the Spurs.
Here are three takeaways from Thursday’s win, which improved the Spurs to 11-4:
1. Fox the ringleader again
The Spurs initially traded for and then extended Fox to be a complement to Wembanyama.
Of late, he’s been vital carrying the Spurs’ offense with Wembanyama sidelined.
Fox topped 20 points for the fourth game in a row, and topped 25 for the third straight game without Wembanyama.
It is his longest stretch of 25-point games since joining the Spurs.
Fox eased into the game Thursday, looking at first to get others involved. He took four shots in the first quarter and had five points.
Over the final three quarters, Fox earned his money again.
2. Hawks get a unicorn back, but Spurs still missing theirs
The Hawks welcomed Kristaps Porzingis back from the injured list after a three-game absence due to knee soreness.
Porzingis was considered an NBA unicorn when he came into the league in 2015 with New York, a 7-foot-2 center who moved and shot like a guard.
Sound familiar?
The Spurs were once again without their Unicorn 2.0 in Wembanyama on Thursday, which created a few mismatches for Porzingis.
Porzingis ended with 16 points and five rebounds in his return.
The man who started in place of Wembanyama on Thursday — Luke Kornet — spent the previous two seasons spelling Porzingis in Boston.
“It’s been cool seeing how much polish he’s added to his game now, compared to earlier in his career,” Kornet said of Porzingis. “You can see all the developments he’s made. He’s got a lot of different ways he can attack and help his team.”
3. David Jones Garcia a game-changer again
For the second consecutive game, rookie guard David Jones Garcia received meaningful first-half minutes.
For the second consecutive game, he made the most of them.
After Tuesday’s win over Memphis, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson noted Jones Garcia’s box score — two points and two assists in seven minutes — “will not be on SportsCenter” but that the 23-year-old’s energy changed the game.
“He played the brand of basketball we want to play,” Johnson said.
Jones Garcia’s box score was a little more pronounced against Atlanta.
The Dominican guard scored seven consecutive points during a two-minute stretch of the second quarter when the Spurs were trying to extend a lead.
This time, Jones Garcia also received key fourth-quarter minutes, and turned the game around again. He was especially big on the defensive end down the stretch, snagging three steals.
Had the Spurs boasted a full complement of guards, it is likely Jones Garcia would have been inactive or in the G League on Thursday.
Instead, he helped boost the Spurs’ fortunes against the Hawks.
