Spurs’ Luke Kornet comes up big in his return from injured list

As a culinary town, Chicago is known for its deep dish pizza, its Polish sausage and its Italian beef sandwiches.

Forgive the basketball fans of the Windy City if they no longer care much for the flavor of French vanilla.

Monday night at the United Center marked the return of backup big man Luke Kornet to the Spurs’ lineup after a seven game stint on the injured list.

It also meant the rejuvenation of the Kornet-Victor Wembanyama big man combo, which fans have come to dub “French Vanilla.”

“It’s good to have him back,” Wembanyama said. “There are not a lot of shot-blockers like him in the league. It’s always good to play with Luke.”

Wembanyama was the star of the Spurs’ 121-117 come-from-behind victory over the Bulls, scoring 38 points with 12 rebounds, five blocks and five assists.

The 7-foot-1 Kornet was back in his dual role as Wembanyama’s top backup and occasional tag-team partner.

The “French Vanilla” pairing was key down the stretch Monday, with Wembanyama and Kornet combining for 28 of the team’s 32 points in the final frame.

Together, they helped limit the Bulls to 19 points in the fourth quarter.

“I thought he was great,” coach Mitch Johnson said of Kornet. “We did a great job finishing and he was an important part of the group that was out there.”

Kornet had been out of the lineup since an Oct. 24 victory at New Orleans, when the 30-year-old suffered a sprained ankle and sprained right shoulder.

The ankle healed fairly quickly, Kornet said. It was the shoulder that kept him off the floor for 17 days.

“That was more of the lingering thing that took some time to get back to strength and get it to calm down,” Kornet said.

Kornet made all six of his field goals in his return Monday, scoring 16 points to go with seven rebounds in 20 minutes.

“The first half it was a couple minutes of feeling like I’m really good moving, and then I got a little tired,” Kornet said. “That fourth quarter I settled into the game and muscle memory takes over. It’s good to be back, good to be playing.”

Harper still in walking boot

Rookie guard Dylan Harper did not make the trip with the Spurs to Chicago, instead remaining in San Antonio to rehab from a left calf strain.

Harper has been in a walking boot since suffering the injury Nov. 2 at Phoenix and has not been participating in any on-court activities. Johnson said before Monday’s game he hoped to receive an update on Harper’s progress after the team returned from Chicago.

Headache fells Vassell

Starting shooting guard Devin Vassell exited Monday’s contest after 5:23 of the second half with a migraine and did not return.

Johnson said he did not think the condition would affect Vassell going forward.

“He’s fine now,” Johnson said after the game. “He tried to come up and say he’s feeling better. I didn’t get the thumbs up from the medical staff (to put him back in) but he’s fine.”
