3 Takeaways as Wembanyama owns fourth quarter in Chicago

CHICAGO – The great Chicago curse is officially over.

For that, the Spurs can thank one Victor Wembanyama.

The All-Star center scored 18 of his 38 points in the fourth quarter Monday to lift the Spurs to a 121-117 come-from-behind victory over the Bulls at the United Center.

It snapped a six-game losing streak for the Spurs against Chicago, a skid that had matched Boston as the Spurs’ longest against an individual opponent.

It was also the Spurs’ first victory at the United Center since March of 2021, a stretch of four consecutive losses.

In addition to Wembanyama’s highest-scoring game since a 40-point opus at Dallas on opening night, the 7-foot-4 Frenchman added 12 rebounds, five assists and five blocks.

De’Aaron Fox chipped in 21 points for the Spurs, who also got 19 from Stephon Castle and 16 from Luke Kornet.

The victory improved the Spurs to 8-2, their best start after 10 games since 2015-16.

Here are three takeaways from Monday’s win:

1. Superstars win in the NBA, and the Spurs have one

More often than not, fourth quarter games in the NBA come down to stars playing like stars.

Wembanyama did that and then some.

The Spurs trailed by as many as 13 points early in the fourth quarter. Wembanyama got the Spurs back into it with a personal 10-0 run that cut the score to 104-101 with 7:03 left.

When the Bulls refused to submit on their own, Wembanyama beat them into submission himself.

His deep 3-pointer over Nikola Vucevic tied the score at 114 with a minute left. On the Spurs’ next possession, Wembanyama hit another pull-up 3-pointer on Vucevic to give the Spurs the lead with 27.1 ticks left.

In the pre-Wembanyama era, the Spurs lost countless games the way Chicago did Monday – play well for large swaths of the game but lose to a superstar doing superstar things in the fourth.

The Spurs prefer to be on this side of things.

2. French Vanilla rides again

Kornet gave the Spurs a boost after missing the previous seven games with ankle and shoulder injuries.

The 7-1 backup center slid right back into his role spelling Wembanyama at times, and playing alongside him at others.

That so-called French Vanilla combination was big down the stretch.

Wembanyama obviously did what Wembanyama does in the fourth. Kornet made significant plays, scoring six points in the 10-0 run that put the Spurs on top as well as challenging everything inside defensively.

Wembanyama and Kornet accounted for 28 of the Spurs’ 32 points in the decisive fourth quarter.

Kornet is an important piece to the Spurs’ puzzle. Now they have him back.

3. Tre Jones is right at home in Chicago

Jones spent the first 4 ½ seasons of his NBA career in San Antonio, earning his stripes as a little-engine-that-could second-round draft pick.

He went to Chicago last February as part of the three-way deal that brought Fox to the Spurs from Sacramento.

Jones admitted it was tough to leave the Alamo City, where he and his family had built a life. In Chicago, however, Jones has found his basketball home, so much so he signed a three-year, $24 million deal last summer to return to the Windy City.

The 25-year-old has started all 10 games with the Bulls this season, averaging 12.8 points, 5.3 assists and two steals heading into Monday.

All he did against his former team was put up a season high with 20 points to go with seven rebounds and seven assists.

It is unfortunate for Jones he won’t be around for the next step in the Wembanyama revolution. From a playing-time and role perspective, the move to Chicago has been a boon to his career.

Even if Fox never came to San Antonio, Jones was likely to fall down the depth chart behind up-and-coming guards Castle and rookie Dylan Harper.

In Chicago, Jones is a starter with a role to play and a job to do.
