LOS ANGELES — The Spurs have their first losing streak of the season after Victor Wembanyama struggled through another sub-par offensive performance.
Luka Doncic had 35 points and 13 assists and Deandre Ayton had 22 points as the Lakers outlasted the Spurs 118-116 in a game marred by a whopping 66 combined fouls that lasted nearly three hours.
Julian Champagnie had a chance to force overtime, but he missed his first free throw with 0.2 seconds left with the Lakers ahead by the final score. Keldon Johnson failed on an attempt to tap in the ball after Champagnie’s second miss.
Three days after he scored just nine points in a 130-118 loss at Phoenix, Wembanyama had 19 on 5 of 14 from the field against the Lakers before fouling out with 1:39 left in the game when he got whistled for charging into Rue Hachimura on a baseline move with L.A. leading 113-112. The Spurs challenged the call, but it was upheld upon review.
Jeremy Sochan, who made his season debut after healing from calf and wrist injuries, and Harrison Barnes also fouled out in the final minutes.
The Lakers improved to 6-2 with their fifth straight win. The Spurs have lost two in a row after starting the season a franchise-best 5-0.
Here are three takeways from the first of three meetings with the Lakers:
Now, Kornet and Fox need to return
The Spurs took a step in the right direction toward regaining full health with Sochan, forward/center Kelly Olynyk (heel) and guard Lindy Waters III (eye) making their season debuts.
Of the three, Sochan looked the sharpest, finishing with 16 points on 6 of 7 from the floor in 23 minutes. He was also solid defensively and showed mid-season form in terms of his famed ability to pester opponents. Among his highlights: A slam off a lob pass from Castle with 8:51 left in the game that gave the Spurs a 101-93 lead and a corner 3 with 7:23 for a 106-97 advantage.
Waters also had some good moments, finishing with six points on 2 of 2 from beyond the arc in 14 minutes.
Olynyk (four points, four rebounds and three assists in nine minutes) struggled to shake off his considerable rust, which will likely be the case for a while. The 13th-year journeyman had a tough time defensively, especially after Wembanyama went to the bench after picking up his third foul with 8:39 left in the first half.
Olynyk had the longest layoff of the three after undergoing heel surgery in April shortly after his season ended in New Orleans.
Given Olynyk’s difficulties defensively, the Spurs can’t get rim-protecting backup center Luke Kornet back soon enough. Same goes for guard De’Aaron Fox, who is needed more than ever with rookie guard Dylan Harper out indefinitely with a strained calf and Wembanyama struggling to regain the dominance he showed offensively in the first five games.
Wembanyama having tough time with swarming defenses
The All-Star center averaged 30.2 points per game in helping the Spurs get off to a franchise-record 5-0 start, but he’s struggled the last two games to adjust to swarming double-teams.
“I haven’t seen this kind of defense from teams, so we need to adapt as a collective,” he said.
To a man, the coaching staff and his teammates believe that will happen. The return of Fox probably will make it a lot easier.
Ball security needs to be a Castle priority
Lakers coach JJ Redick heaped praise on the 2025 rookie of the year before the game.
“He’s a terrific player,” Redick said.
Castle lived up to the praise by recording 16 points, eight assists and three steals while making Doncic work for his 35 points.
But the one flaw in his game surfaced again. He committed six turnovers after entering the game averaging a league-high 4.8 per game.
“I think obviously six turnovers is too much and he agrees with that,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson. “Some of his turnovers are just inappropriate and unacceptable, and we’ll have to be better with that.”
Given Castle’s work ethic and his desire to be great, it’s a safe bet that he’ll eventually cut down on the mistakes.
