PHOENIX – The Phoenix Suns scouts deserve a raise.
Victor Wembanyama said as much after the Suns held him in check and defeated the Spurs 130-118 on Sunday night.
“They did a great job having a scheme defensively,” Wembanyama said. “They were expecting everything that we did, so that makes it hard for us.”
In handing the Spurs their first loss of the season after their franchise-record 5-0 start, Phoenix held the All-Star center to just nine points on 4 of 14 from the field in 34 minutes after he entered the game averaging averaging 30.2 points on 56.3% shooting. He also committed six turnovers and had just nine rebounds after averaging 14.6 in the first five outings.
Wembanyama nemesis Dillon Brooks was out with an injury, but the Suns still had plenty of muscle in the form of undersized but tenacious 6-foot-6 forward Royce O’Neale and bigs Mark Williams, Nick Richards and Oso Ighodaro.
Even 6-foot-3 Jordan Goodwin contributed to the swarming defense against the 7-4 Wembanyama.
“I give a ton of credit to Phoenix,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “They imposed their will on the game. They were physical and competitive. They set a tone from the jump in a variety of ways, and physicality with all of our players was definitely part of that.”

But Wembanyama said the Suns’ physical play wasn’t much of a factor in him posting only the fifth single-digit scoring game of his three-year career and the first since he had a career-low six in a loss to Oklahoma City on Oct. 30, 2024.
The biggest problem, he said, was how Phoenix (3-4) seemed to anticipate his every move before throwing effective double-teams at him.
“They must have walked through at shootaround all of our situations because it seemed like they were ready,” Wembanyama said.
Williams said “throwing a bunch of different looks” at Wembanyama was one of the keys to first-year Suns coach Jordan Ott’s defensive game plan.
Devin Booker had 28 points and 13 assists for Phoenix, which led by as many as 31 points in the third quarter.
“It was a wake-up call for us,” said the Spurs’ Stephon Castle, who had a team-high 26 on an efficient 10 of 16.
Keldon Johnson had 19 points on 8 of 14 off the bench. But Devin Vassell finished with a season-low four points on 4 of 14 after entering the game averaging nearly 17, and the Spurs lost rookie Dylan Harper to a game-ending calf injury in the second quarter after he had 12 points on 5 of 8 in 11 minutes.
Harper could be out for a while, a blow for a team still waiting for De’Aaron Fox to get back on the court after missing the preseason and the first six regular season games with an injured hamstring.
“I hope the best for him,” Wembanyama said of Harper, the No. 2 overall pick, who entered the game averaging 14.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists.
“We’ve seen great things from him,” Wembanyama added. “It’s actually been hard to believe how good he’s played.”
Castle said he and others could have done a better job spacing the floor to give Wembanyama a better opportunity to recognize the double-teams and then pass out of them.
“We know teams don’t want to guard him one on one,” Castle said. “We’ve watched film on it, so we just got to be better at it.”
Julian Champagnie, who finished with nine points, echoed Castle’s comments.
“We got to just do better, get to our spots faster, make it a little easier for him, so if they do double him, there are outlets for him,” Champagnie said. “That’s not the first team to play physical with him. Every team so far this season has played physical with him. It’s just we’ve been a little better off the ball when that happens, and we’ve forced teams to get out of that. Tonight, we were a step slow.”
Thanks to good scouting, good coaching and good execution, the Suns always seemed a step ahead.
“A lot of times, we were blitzing (Wembanyama’s) catches in the post and we were switching with him too,” said Suns guard Grayson Allen, who finished with 17 points on the strength of 5 of 9 from beyond the arc on a night the Suns shot 57.6% (19 of 33) from distance.
Wembanyama said the silver lining is that the Spurs will be better prepared when other teams try to copy the Suns’ approach. The first test will come when the Spurs face the Lakers on Wednesday night in Los Angeles.
“It’s a great time for us to take away a lot of things from this game, maybe because we’re going to see this again,” Wembanyama said. “I know our next opponents watched this game tonight and they’re going to take some things away from this game as well. So, the preparation starts now.”
