PHOENIX – The Spurs suffered their first loss of the season Sunday and may have lost rookie guard Dylan Harper for a while in the process.

Devin Booker had 28 points and 13 assists to lead Phoenix past the Spurs 130-118 after they entered the game 5-0, the best start in franchise history.

“It was kind of a wake-up call for us,” said Stephon Castle, who led the Spurs with 26 points on a night Victor Wembanyama scored just nine in 34 minutes.

Harper missed the second half after suffering a left calf injury with 5:02 left in the first half. The injury happened when the No. 2 overall pick went up to attempt to block a dunk by 7-foot Suns center Nick Richards.

Harper grimaced in pain while grabbing at his lower leg after the play. He hobbled off to the locker room under his own power followed by Spurs general manager Brian Wright.

The Spurs announced at halftime Harper would not return. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson had no further update after the game about the extent of Harper’s injury.

Johnson said he’s “optimistic” the Spurs could get some of their injured players back soon, a list that includes De’Aaron Fox (hamstring), Luke Kornet (ankle), Jeremy Sochan (wrist), Kelly Olynyk (heel) and Lindy Waters III (eye).

The Suns (3-4) led by 31 points in the third quarter.

Here are three takeaways from the first game of a two-game road trip that ends against the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night:

Wembanyma is human after all

Wembanyama nemesis Dillon Brooks was out with an injury, but the Suns still managed to muscle up against the All-Star center, who didn’t get his first points until he dunked with 1:06 left to pull the Spurs within 63-49.

Wembanyama entered the game averaging 30.2 points per game. It was just the fifth time in his career he’s been held to less than 10 points and the first time since he registered a career-low six in loss against Oklahoma City on Oct. 30, 2024.

“They imposed their will on the game,” Johnson said of the Suns. “They were physical and competitive. They set a tone from the jump in a variety of ways and their physicality with all of our players was definitely part of that.”

Wembanyama finished 4 of 14 from the field and 1 of 4 from 3-point range.

Technicals reflect frustration

Johnson and Castle picked up technical fouls with 1.3 seconds left in the first half after Booker was whistled for an illegal contact foul for diving into Wembanyama’s legs while they battled over a loose ball.

Booker sank both free throws for a 70-52 lead at the break.

“I just thought it was escalating prior to that,” Johnson said of some words Booker had with Castle. “I thought it could have probably gotten nipped in the bud prior, but it wasn’t.”

Castle chalked up the technicals to “just emotions of the game, a bunch of guys competing, wanting to win.”

It also likely reflected some frustration by the Spurs over their poor start and failure to match the Suns’ physical play.

Bryant in need of seasoning

Rookie forward Carter Bryant stumbled through an uneven performance in limited minutes during his homecoming to Arizona, solidifying the belief he could use some time in Austin for seasoning in the G League.

The 14th overall pick struggled defensively in the first half while going scoreless on 0 for 3 from the floor, including missing a layup attempt and another inside inside the paint. He looked better in the second half on his way to finishing with 10 points on 4 of 8 from the field and 1 of 3 from 3-point range in 10 minutes.

Bryant was playing for the first time in Arizona after his freshman season with the Arizona Wildcats last year.
