In an expected decision given Spurs star Victor Wembanyama’s spectacular start to his third season, the NBA announced Monday he has been named its Western Conference Player of the Week.

It’s the second time the 7-foot-4 center has collected the honor.

Wembanyama led the Spurs to a 3-0 record to start the season for the first time since 2019 by averaging 33.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, 6.0 blocks, 2.3 assists and 1.6 steals in 33.3 minutes while shooting 56.9% from the field.

The 21-year-old Frenchman is the first player in league history to record 100-plus points, 40-plus rebounds and 15-plus blocks through his team’s first three outings.

Wembanyama kicked off his historic week by posting a franchise record for most points in a season opener with 40 in leading the Spurs to a 125-92 plastering of the Dallas Mavericks last Wednesday in Dallas. He also had 15 rebounds and three blocks to become just the sixth player in NBA history to post 40-plus points and 15-plus rebounds in a season opener.

Wembanyama told ESPN after his monster game against the Mavericks that it reflected all the effort he put in during the offseason to sharpen his game after missing the last two months of last season due to a blood clot in his right shoulder.

“God knows I worked (expletive deleted) hard in the summer,” he said.

Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo won the Eastern Conference honor.
