Through three games, there’s evidence he’s getting the job done.
The Spurs entered Monday night’s game against Toronto ranked second in the NBA in defensive rating (points allowed per 100 possessions) at 104.9 after finishing last season 25th at 117.2 while finishing the season 34-48.
Having held two of their first three foes to 107 points or less, the Spurs are 3-0 for the first time since the 2019-20 season.
“He’s done a lot,” Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, who leads the league with 6.0 blocks per game after swatting six in Sunday’s 118-107 win over Brooklyn, said of Sweeney.
Wembanyama said the team focused on improving defensively daily throughout training camp and the preseason until it became “kind of muscle memory.”
“Sean has really done a great job at keeping us accountable and also talking to the team,” Wembanyama said. “They (the coaches) are also going to us individually to talk to the players and show them film to make sure we know our mistakes and what we need to do better.”
Sweeney is regarded as one of the league’s top defensive minds after stops as an assistant with the Nets, the Milwaukee Bucks, the Detroit Pistons and the Dallas Mavericks.
“His level of expertise, along with his experience, allows him to have a strong voice and we rely on him heavily in that regard,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. "He’s been at numerous places and he’s been a lead assistant. He’s been in the Finals (in 2024 with Dallas), he’s been on a staff (with the Mavericks) where he’s been in charge in helping run offense as well as defense.
“And so you see someone that has a wealth of experience, is very knowledgeable about the league and who coaches guys hard, which is something that this place has done for many years and we value. It’s been really nice to have him.”
