Spurs’ Castle ready for close-up as opening-night starting PG

Castle will be the Spurs’ fifth starting point guard on opening night in as many seasons when the Spurs take on the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday.

DALLAS — The slam dunks got most of the attention, naturally.

Spurs guard Stephon Castle rocked the rim with a pair of highlight-reel slams in the first half of the 133-104 victory over Indiana that closed the preseason last week.

Castle’s coach was more impressed with the nine assists he got out of last season’s NBA Rookie of the Year.

“He made great decisions,” coach Mitch Johnson said. “When you make simple decisions, they can look great.”

Castle’s command of the floor was good sign for the Spurs in the team’s final tune-up.

When the Spurs tip-off the regular season Wednesday at Dallas, Castle will be the team’s starting point guard.

“Having that year under my belt kind of slowed the game down for me a little bit,” Castle said. “Watching film also helped. So it’s just keep repeating that going into the regular season.”

Castle, 20, is set to become the Spurs’ fifth different opening-night starter at point guard in as many years.

That honor would have gone to De’Aaron Fox, except the All-Star is set to begin the season on the injured list while recovering from a hamstring issue.

In the seven seasons since Hall of Famer Tony Parker started his last opening night in silver and black, the Spurs have started five different players at the position in Game 1.

The names on that list range from interesting to ignominious — Dejounte Murray, Bryn Forbes, Tre Jones, Jeremy Sochan and Chris Paul.

The Spurs believe Castle, the former Connecticut standout who spent time both on and off the ball as a rookie, will do well keeping the job warm for Fox.

He averaged 14.7 points, 4.1 assists and 2.2 turnovers as a rookie.

“Steph was asked to do so many things last year with so many different combinations of lineups that it was probably hard for him to find a rhythm doing anything — other than doing a little of everything,” Johnson said. “I think this year there’s a lot clearer expectation of what we need him to do and who he’s going to play with.”

Spurs forward Julian Champagnie said the time spent in tutelage under Paul last season has clearly rubbed off on Castle.

“Last year having CP here helped him a lot with passing the ball and seeing certain reads,” said Champagnie, who scored three of his five 3-pointers against Indiana off passes from Castle. “He’s making those cross court passes that CP used to make a lot, so you could definitely tell that he’s getting better as a player and as a point guard.”

When Fox returns to full health, Castle is likely to slide to a role off the ball.

For now, Castle’s coach is asking him to be spectacular by making the routine plays.

Last week’s game against the Pacers provided the blueprint.

“I don’t think he did anything that was ‘wow’ except he made the right play numerous times in a row and it felt like a ‘wow’ moment,” Johnson said. “That’s something we have to continue to embrace.”
