Spurs guard Stephon Castle appeared to be ready for another shot at the dunk contest at All-Star Weekend after throwing down a couple of impressive slams early in Friday night’s 133-104 win over the Pacers.
“My legs were feeling good,” said Castle, who finished second in the competition last year in San Francisco, losing to two-time defending champ Mac McClung in the final round.
Although Castle’s dunks against Indiana thrilled the crowd at the Frost Bank Center, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson was more impressed with the Connecticut alumnus’ performance as a playmaker.
Starting at point guard with De’Aaron Fox sidelined with the hamstring injury that forced him to miss the preseason and will keep him out of Wednesday’s season opener at Dallas, Castle finished with 16 points, nine assists and only one turnover in the preseason finale.
“He was great,” Johnson said of the way Castle distributed the ball. “We did a good job of executing with our screens and our spacing around it, and he made great decisions. I don’t think he did anything that was ‘wow’ except he made the right play numerous times in a row and it felt like a ‘wow’ moment. That’s something we have to continue to embrace.”
Castle rated his decision-making as “high” entering the regular season. He’s expected to start at point guard against the Mavericks.
“I’ve been keeping my turnovers down,” he said. “I also credit my teammates for obviously making shots.”
The 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year said the game has slowed down for him since he entered the league as the fourth overall pick in 2024.
“Watching film also helped, so I just need to keep repeating that going on to the regular season,” he said.
