Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama says he’s pretty much in dark about arena

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama speaks to reporters during the NBA basketball team’s media day in San Antonio, Monday, Sept. 29, 2025.

While voters hash out the pros and cons of an election in November on a Bexar County venue tax to partially fund the new Spurs downtown arena, the team’s players, including franchise cornerstone Victor Wembanyama, apparently don’t know much about it.

Asked during a media session after practice Friday if the Spurs have asked him “to give input” on the arena issue, Wembanyama said, “Not really. They haven’t really asked me or us really. Just yesterday, actually, we heard about it a little bit, but I haven’t really gotten much into it. But it is interesting. Of course as a player, as a member of the team, I would love a new arena, but I know there’s some more depth to the subject.”

Wembanyama also said he hasn’t seen any drawings of Project Marvel, the city’s planned multibillion-dollar downtown sports and entertainment district, which would include the Spurs arena as its centerpiece.

Bexar County voters will decide Nov. 4 - early voting is Oct. 20-31 - whether the county and City of San Antonio will proceed with a plan to partner with the Spurs on constructing a new building with an estimated $1.3 billion price tag.

Proposition A on the ballot asks voters to decide whether to devote a portion of the county’s tax on hotel rooms and rental cars to renovate the Frost Bank Center, Freeman Coliseum and other rodeo facilities on the East Side.

Proposition B asks whether the county should contribute public dollars to the downtown arena.

Both propositions ask whether to raise the county’s tax on hotel rooms from 1.75% to 2% and keep its tax on rental cars at 5%. If voters approve Prop A, the county would devote $192 million of the revenue to renovate the county’s East Side grounds so the rodeo can operate there year round. Prop B would commit up to $311 million to help fund the Spurs arena, with the city and Spurs picking up the rest of the tab.
