Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama hopes downtown arena sparks ‘whole ecosystem’

San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) and San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) high-five during the NBA game Toronto Raptors at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Monday, Oct. 27, 2025.

LOS ANGELES - Spurs franchise cornerstone Victor Wembanyama sounded like an urban planner when asked for his reaction to Bexar County voters approving a plan to finance a new downtown arena for the team.

“It’s cool,” the 21-year-old Frenchman said after Wednesday’s 118-116 loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles. “I’m happy. Hopefully it is a project that can grow into something more than just a building, (grow into) a whole ecosystem. I’m hopeful.”

Wembanyama’s teammates and coach joined the All-Star center in applauding the decision by about 52% of voters in Tuesday’s election to approve Prop B, which devotes up to $311 million in county hotel and rental car tax dollars to help pay for a new $1.3 billion arena at the former Institute of Texan Cultures site at Hemisfair.

The Spurs hope to move into the new building after their lease at Bexar County’s Frost Bank Center is up in 2032.

“Great news,” said guard Stephon Castle, the 2025 NBA Rookie of the Year. “It just shows how much the city is behind us and how much they care for our city.”

Public financing will cover 61.5% of the arena’s construction costs. The city has agreed to contribute up to $489 million through a combination of its share of state hotel taxes, property tax revenue from new development around the arena and ground leases for that development.

The Spurs have promised to contribute $500 million and cover cost overruns.

Castle noted the Frost Bank Center, the Spurs’ current home, will also benefit from the results of Tuesday’s election.

Prop A, which 56% of the voters approved, will devote up to $192 million in county tax dollars to renovate the Frost Bank Center, the Freeman Coliseum and surrounding facilities so the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo can host year-round Western events.

“It’s going to bring a lot of people together,” Castle said. “I’m happy about it.”

The promise of a new arena, in addition to the state-of-the-art practice facility they already have, could help the Spurs with recruiting free agents.

“If I hear a ‘new arena,’ and (with) the team we already have, with all the young talent we got, it’s definitely eye opening,” Castle said.

The Spurs have enjoyed playing in new venues around the league, including Los Angeles Clippers’ $2 billion Intuit Dome in Inglewood, which opened in August 2024 and is the NBA’s newest arena.

Now, they look forward to playing in a shiny new venue of their own.

“I’m just really excited for the city of San Antonio and for our organization,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “I think you see it across the league. Los Angeles is a great example of that (with Crypto.com Arena in downtown L.A.). It’s more than just the basketball, with the surrounding areas and the venues and restaurants, the music, all the things that are potentially opportunities to grow with the team. It’s just something really exciting for the team to be a part of downtown San Antonio.”

Guard Devin Vassell echoed his coach’s comments.

“I’m excited for San Antonio, for the community, for downtown,” he said. “It’s going to be huge. It’s going to be exciting. I can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s finished.”
