We’re getting closer to the end…or are we?
Since 2008, the drafting of George Hill, in some form, continues to affect the Spurs roster.
From the initial trade that yielded Kawhi Leonard through the trade that put DeMar DeRozan and Jakob Poeltl in Spurs uniforms, the thread still exists.
You can read the initial article and part 2 to get fully caught up.
As previously mentioned, once Kawhi Leonard’s desire to be traded became clear, he and Danny Green were sent to Toronto for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl, and the 2019 draft pick that was utilized to acquire Keldon Johnson.
Yesterday we followed DeMar DeRozan’s 2021 trade. Today we get caught up with how Jakob Poeltl’s journey back to Toronto enhanced —and continues to enhance— the Spurs present and future roster.
On February 9, 2023, the Spurs traded Poeltl to the Raptors for Khem Birch, a 2023 second-round pick, a 2024 first-round pick, and a 2025 second-round pick.
Khem Birch was waived.
The Spurs used the 2023 pick to acquire Sidy Cissoko. Cissoko played with the Spurs in his rookie season. During the second year, he was sent to the Sacramento Kings in the three-team trade that brought De’Aaron Fox and Jordan McLaughlin to San Antonio.
The 2024 first-round pick resulted in the drafting of Rob Dillingham. Dillingham was sent to Minnesota on draft night in exchange for a 2030 protected first-round pick swap and an unprotected first-round pick in 2031. The 2031 pick was also bundled as part of the De’Aaron Fox trade. The Spurs currently retain the 2030 pick swap.

Recap- In an elaborate game of Red Rover, the Spurs drafted George Hill in 2008, re-signed Danny Green in 2015, re-signed Drew Eubanks in 2020, drafted Tre Jones in 2020, drafted Blake Wesley in 2022, and re-signed Zach Collins in 2023. Pepper in a few draft picks and as a result of the Spurs trades, they start this season with Keldon Johnson, Harrison Ingram, De’Aaron Fox, Jordan McLaughlin, Kelly Olynyk and a most favorable 2030 first-round pick between the Mavericks and Timberwolves.
