It is still three months before the start of the new NBA season, and already new Spurs coach Mitch Johnson has been awarded 32 career victories.

In a bit of coaching record housekeeping, the league office confirmed Wednesday the 77 games Johnson coached last season in the wake of Gregg Popovich’s stroke will go toward Johnson’s career ledger.

Of course that means Johnson — formally named the team’s permanent head coach in May — will begin his coaching career this fall with a losing tally (32-45).

Popovich officially finishes his Hall of Fame career at 1,390-824. He is still the winningest coach in NBA history by a fairly healthy margin, with 55 more than Don Nelson.

The active coach nearest Popovich’s all-time victories mark is Milwaukee’s Doc Rivers, with 1,162.

The league consulted with the Spurs and Popovich in setting the record book straight.

Popovich, 76, suffered a stroke before a Nov. 2 contest against Minnesota, five games into his 29th season. The team handed the reins to the 38-year-old Johnson on an interim basis while Popovich attempted to work his way back to the bench.

That did not happen, and Johnson completed the season, leading the Spurs to an overall mark of 34-48 that equaled their best in six seasons.

Among basketball wonks, it led to some confusion as to whose coaching record should absorb those wins and losses.

Generally, when a coach is forced to cede the reins to an acting head coach for a short amount of time, due to illness or other emergency, the wins and losses remain with the original coach.

Considering Popovich did not return at all, and Johnson was eventually named his full-time successor, the NBA believes the final 77 games of the season belong to Johnson.

In that, there is precedent.

In November 1979, the Los Angeles Lakers lost coach Jack McKinney to a near-fatal bicycle accident. He was replaced by assistant Paul Westhead for the final 68 games.

Westhead led the Lakers to a 50-18 finish, as well as that season’s NBA title, all of which were added to his coaching record.
