Spurs land Boston’s Luke Kornet in early NBA free agency

Former Boston Celtics center Luke Kornet grapples for a rebound with San Antonio Spurs Jeremy Sochan on Saturday, March 29, 2025. The Spurs agreed to terms on a four-year contract worth $41 million with Kornet during the early hours of NBA free agency Monday evening.
The Spurs got their (big) man.
In the opening hour of free agency Monday, the club moved to address its most glaring roster hole, agreeing to a four-year, $41-million deal with veteran center Luke Kornet. NBA free agent contracts can’t be signed or made official until Sunday.
As soon as he signs the deal, The 7-foot-2 Kornet will instantly become the best backup center of Victor Wembanyama’s fledgling career. It isn’t a lofty list to top.
The 29-year-old Kornet, who is entering his ninth season, averaged six points, 5.3 rebounds and a block off the bench last season in Boston, and emerged as a key contributor to the Celtics’ playoff run.
Kornet won a championship with the Celtics in 2024.
He joins a Spurs team that entered this year’s free agency period in desperate search of a big body to play with and behind Wembanyama.
Other than the 7-3 Wembanyama, the tallest player on the Spurs’ roster at the opening bell of free agency Monday was the 6-8 Jeremy Sochan. Holdovers Charles Bassey (6-11), Sandro Mamukelashvili (6-10) and Bismack Biyombo (6-8) all became free agents in their own right.
The Spurs on Tuesday lost Mamukelashvili to Toronto, where he agreed to a two-year, $5.5-million deal.
Sochan spent some time last season as the Spurs’ small-ball five. In Kornet, the Spurs now have a more traditional backup for the All-Star Wembanyama.
Kornet is the latest casualty in the Celtics’ bid to move their payroll out of the second apron luxury tax threshold, in order to avoid the punitive measures that come with it.
Earlier this offseason, Boston dealt away a pair of high-priced All-Stars, sending guard Jrue Holiday to Portland and center Kristaps Porzingis to Atlanta.
The Spurs harbored interest in getting in on a deal for Porzingis. When that did not materialize, the Spurs set their sights on Porzingis’ Celtics teammate.
Kornet’s career also includes stops in Cleveland, Milwaukee, Chicago and New York. He spent the past 4½ seasons in Boston, where his toughness and defensive presence fashioned him into a fan favorite.
The Spurs are likely giving Kornet a chunk of their $14.1-million mid-level exception, their most high-dollar tool for attracting outside free agents this summer.
Depending on how Kornet’s contract is structured, the team will have some portion of the MLE left to spend, as well as a $5.1-million bi-annual exception and veteran minimum contracts with which to round out their roster.
