Rumor: Spurs expected to pursue Luke Kornet in free agency
The Celtics would love to retain the big man, but he could be looking for more money than they are willing to pay.
The Spurs are expected to be players in the free agency big man market, after selecting a guard and a wing in the draft. Rival executives expect Luke Kornet to be one of their targets, according to The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer($).
Kornet is a journeyman center who found a home with the Celtics in 2022 after bouncing around the league and playing for six other teams since starting his career, including a short stint in Boston. For a while, he was more well-known for the Kornet Kontest than his play, but in the past two years, he became a staple of Joe Mazzulla’s rotation. The numbers aren’t impressive, as he averaged just six points, 5.3 rebounds, and a block a game last season on 18.6 minutes a night in arguably his best season. But he was a solid defender who stepped up whenever he was needed to fill in for an injured big man. His impact went beyond the box score, with the Celtics outscoring opponents by 14.9 points per 100 possessions with Kornet on the floor in the regular season.
The appeal of Kornet is his solid, traditional big man play. He’s listed at 7’1 and he uses his size well inside. He’s not an outside threat and hasn’t attempted to be one in years, happily accepting that he’s at his best in the paint. He’ll grab offensive boards and finish around the rim on offense, and he’ll end possessions and protect the rim on defense. Kornet is a workhorse who doesn’t need touches and is happy to use his functional passing to keep the ball moving. His screens are solid, and his activity level is high, as he contests a ton of shots. There’s nothing flashy about his game, but he has proved he can give a good team 15-20 minutes of productive, mistake-averse two-way play at the center position. With Victor Wembanyama coming off a long period of inactivity, having someone to eat up minutes without harming the team would be valuable for San Antonio.
The question with Kornet is how much he is hoping to get in free agency. Fischer points out that the soon-to-be 30-year-old big never had a big payday and could be looking for one in the mid-level exception market. He’s unquestionably a solid player, but if he’s hoping to get the full exception, that could give teams pause. He’s at his best as a backup, and he doesn’t seem to have a lot of upside left, unless the outside shooting flashes he showed earlier in his career turn into a new reliable weapon. For the Spurs, he’s someone they could only pair with Victor Wembanyama in select matchups and who would likely struggle to share the floor with Jeremy Sochan, unless Sochan makes a major leap as a shooter. The screening could massively help the guards, but using the best tool left to add talent heading into the season on someone who might log 15 minutes a game could feel wasteful.
Kornet could definitely help the Spurs, who have struggled whenever Wembanyama has sat. The question is whether the rest of the roster is good enough that prioritizing signing a potentially pricey backup center makes sense.
Free agency will kick off on Monday, June 30, at 5 p.m. CST.
