Open Thread: Former Spurs sharpshooter Marco Belinelli retired
A member of the Spurs 2014 title run hangs up his jersey
Marco Belinelli, twice a member of the San Antonio Sours, officially retired from professional basketball last week. He went out on top as his most recent team, Virtus Bologna, had just won the 2025 Italian Championship.
Belinelli’s professional career spanned more than two decades with Citrus Bologna bookending his start in 2002 and his retirement.
The Italian sharpshooter started his NBA career in 2007 after being drafted eighteenth overall in 2007 by the Golden State Warriors. His time in the NBA included stints with the Warriors, Toronto Raptors, New Orleans Hornets, Chicago Bulls, Sacramento Kings, Charlotte Hornets, Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers and two terms with the San Antonio Spurs.
His first tour with the Silver & Black, from 2013-2015, yielded an NBA championship. In addition to that 2014 title, “Beli” was the 2014 Three-Point Contest Champion during the All-Star festivities.
He joined the Spurs again from 2018-2020 before heading back to Italy where he had played as a teenager.
Overseas, Belinelli accumulated multiple accolades including Italian Cup, EuroCup, Italian SuperCup, and many Legie Series A honors.
Belinelli may be retired, but eyes should be kept on him to see where he sets his talent next. Possibly coaching, maybe development, hopefully shaping the next generation of players both in his native Italy as well as his home away from home, San Antonio.
