Former San Antonio Spurs guard Marco Belinelli is retiring after a basketball career spanning more than 20 years.
Belinelli, who spent two stints with the Spurs and had a key role off the bench for the 2014 NBA championship team, played the last five years of his career for Virtus Bologna of EuroLeague.
Virtus Bologna president and owner Massimo Zanetti confirmed Belinelli’s retirement to EuroHoops on Wednesday. Belinelli helped Virtus Bologna to its 17th Italian championship, averaging 6.2 points per game over 30 games during the season.
The Spurs offered their congratulations to Belinelli, known for his shooting prowess, in a post to their social media accounts Friday.

On that 2014 Spurs NBA championship team, Belinelli averaged 11.4 points and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 43% from 3-point range and playing 25 minutes per game. He made 16 of 38 3-pointers during the Spurs’ playoff run, and he scored 19 points in a Game 1 win over the Portland Trail Blazers in the second round.
He left the Spurs following the 2014-15 season and signed with the Sacramento Kings. He ended his 13-year NBA career with two more seasons with the Spurs from 2018-2020.
Belinelli was selected by the Golden State Warriors with the 18th pick in the 2007 NBA Draft after beginning his career in Italy in 2002. He played for nine different teams, none more than his 278 games with the Spurs, and finished his NBA career averaging 9.7 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game while shooting 37.6 percent from deep.
