Spurs draftees Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant will likely take different paths as rookies next season.

While Harper is expected to help immediately, possibly at first in a bench role, Bryant could start out the season in Austin to receive some seasoning in the G League.

In the 6-foot-5, 215-pound Harper, the Spurs have a dynamic offensive force who can dictate the pace of the game and get to the rim with ease. The No. 2 pick in the draft will provide an immediate spark with his scoring and playmaking, albeit perhaps initially as a backup at point guard to De’Aaron Fox.

As a freshman at Rutgers last season, the 19-year-old New Jersey native averaged 19.4 points, 4.0 assists and 1.4 steals while shooting 33.3 percent from deep and 48.4 percent from the field.

Spurs general manager Brian Wright also expects Harper to provide a lift with his positive attitude and mature-beyond-his-years personality.

“He’s got a rare confidence with humility,” Wright said of the New Jersey native. “He’s a very down-to-earth, simple kid. Loves basketball. And after spending time with him throughout the process, you can tell that he knows he’s a good basketball player. But he wants to be part of a group, he wants to be part of a team, he’s willing to sacrifice, he’s willing to work for it, and the more we spend time with them, the more we felt confident in that.”

The 6-foot-7, 215-pound Bryant eventually will be a productive 3-and-D player who will spread the floor with his perimeter shooting and serve as a versatile defender who can guard four positions. After the aforementioned time in Austin, look for the 14th overall pick to come off the bench in support of Harrison Barnes.

“He’s super versatile,” Wright said of the 19-year-old California native. “He’s a big wing that can guard four positions. He spaces the floor well. He’s a really good athlete. He’s a smart young kid, and he’s got the right character and makeup we look for.”

Bryant mainly came off the bench last season at Arizona, averaging just 6.5 points while playing only 19.5 minutes per game on average as a freshman.

“Prototypical 3-and-D, they call him,” analyst Bob Myers said during ESPN’s draft coverage. “Not a huge usage rate, didn’t handle the ball, but you can pencil him in and he can do those things, and those picks have tremendous value.”
