Kevin Durant headed to Texas, but not San Antonio

San Antonio Spurs guard Chris Paul (3) guards Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant (35) during the first quarter at Moody Center on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025, in Austin, Texas. The Spurs defeated the Suns 120-109.

Kevin Durant is headed back to Texas – but not to San Antonio.

The long-running Durant sweepstakes came to an end Sunday, with the Phoenix Suns at last agreeing to a deal to send the former University of Texas to the Houston Rockets.

Terms of the trade, as reported by ESPN, have the Suns delivering Durant to Houston for a haul that includes guards Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in this year’s draft and a collection of five second-round picks.

Durant’s name has been in the trade rumor mill for much of the offseason, as the disappointing Suns are looking to rebuild around All-Star guard Devin Booker.

According to multiple reports in recent days, the 15-time All-Star had narrowed his list of preferred destinations to Houston, Miami and San Antonio – with the Spurs believed to be his top choice.

The Spurs’ refusal to include either the No. 2 pick in this year’s draft or reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle in any trade discussion likely sent Phoenix looking elsewhere.

Durant, who turns 36 in September, is entering the final year of his current contract. He is eligible for a two-year extension worth as much as $122 million once the trade with Houston is processed.
