《The Athletic》

Suns’ Kevin Durant reportedly eyeing Spurs as trade rumors swirl
Kevin Durant’s dead-eye shooting would help space the floor for All-Star center Victor Wembanyama.
As trade rumors swirl regarding the Phoenix Suns’ bid to fetch a favorable return for Kevin Durant, San Antonio reportedly has emerged as the preferred destination of the aging star.
Citing league sources as the Suns engage in talks with several teams, The Athletic reported Monday night the future Hall of Famer has identified the Spurs as the franchise he specifically would like to join.
The Suns don’t necessarily have to trade Durant to his preferred team, but the 16-year veteran possesses some leverage with just one year left on his contract. ESPN reported recently Durant has indicated he would be willing to sign an extension with only three teams: the Houston Rockets, the Miami Heat and the Spurs.
Now San Antonio, which is in need of a consistent outside threat to space the floor for All-Star center Victor Wembanyama, reportedly heads that list. But are the Spurs willing to give Phoenix what it wants as the Suns seek to maximize the return for the 6-foot-11 forward?
The Suns reportedly have not been enamored with what the Spurs have offered so far, a package The Athletic described as “conservative,” meaning the No. 2 pick in the upcoming draft and 2024-25 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle are almost certainly off limits.
The assets the Spurs likely have discussed with Phoenix include Harrison Barnes, Devin Vassell and the 14th pick in the draft. If the Suns want to get a deal done with the Spurs, they likely will have to reduce their asking price, the Arizona Republic, citing league sources, reported.
A 15-time All-Star, four-time NBA scoring champion and two-time league champion with the Golden State Warriors, Durant has spent the last three seasons with the Suns. But Phoenix is looking to start what observers have called a “soft rebuild” after missing the playoffs last year.
Durant, who will be 37 at the start of next season, is on an expiring contract worth $54.7 million for the 2025-26 season. He will be eligible starting July 6 to sign a two-year extension worth up to $122 million.
Should he wait six months after the trade, he could sign a two-year extension worth up to $124 million.
Durant averaged 26.6 points per game last season while shooting 43% from 3-point range on 6 attempts per outing over 62 games. The University of Texas alumnus is averaging 27.2 points for his career while shooting 39% from beyond the arc on 5 attempts per game.
The Spurs finished 34-48 last season, extending their franchise-record playoff drought to five seasons.
