The Spurs have signed new head coach Mitch Johnson to a multi-year deal, a league source confirmed Tuesday.
Johnson was introduced as the 19th head coach in franchise history – and Gregg Popovich’s successor – at a news conference Monday at the team’s practice facility.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Citing information provided by Johnson’s agent, Andy Miller of Klutch Sports, HoopsHype.com was the first to report the new contract.
Johnson spent last season as acting head coach after Popovich suffered a mild stroke five games into the campaign. The Spurs announced Popovich’s retirement from coaching last Friday and that Johnson, 38, would replace him.
Popovich, 76, will continue to serve as the club’s president of basketball operations.
The Spurs finished last season with a 34-48 record, including going 32-45 under Johnson, who has been an assistant under Popovich since 2019.
“Mitch Johnson lives our values and strives for excellence,” Spurs managing partner Peter J. Holt said at Monday’s news conference. “He possesses immense humility and an incredible will. We are thrilled to have him to lead us and to grow with us together. … We are wildly excited about the future.”
