Clippers steal game 2 behind Leonard’s stupendous performance, 105-102

NBA: Playoffs-Los Angeles Clippers at Denver Nuggets

Denver (20) had more turnovers tonight and loses home court advantage in the process

Los Angeles and Denver made another step in their journey towards the best first-round series since Spurs / Clippers (2015) in a 105-102 outcome that emphatically tied this series at 1-1. Kawhi Leonard nearly had a perfect shooting night through 2.5 quarters (11-for-12), and in a tight contest throughout, it proved just enough to help Los Angeles even the series with Denver - especially after he hit a clutch jumper from the right wing and stole a Nuggets pass with seconds remaining. Leonard’s colossal production was nearly undone by the first true appearance of Michael Porter, Jr. who had four critical points down the stretch. If there was any criticism tonight to be made of either competitor, it was the Nuggets’ faulty free throw shooting (14-for-x22).

Kawhi Leonard (39 points on 15-for-19 shooting and 5 assists), James Harden (18 points and 7 assists) and Ivica Zubac (16 points and 12 reounds) accounted for 70+% of the team’s output through three periods to get Los Angeles a tenuous lead. Norman Powell (13 points and 3 steals) caught fire in the fourth quarter to ease the load of the Clippers’ main three.

Jamal Murray (23 points and 6 assists) and Michael Porter, Jr. (15 points and 15 rebounds) were capable support for Nikola Jokic (26 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds). Aaron Gordon (14 points and 6 rebounds) stepped up his output in the second half in the loss.

A 5-for-5 start from Leonard propelled the visiting Clippers, while Porter, Jr. was a welcome contributor for Denver with six early points. Outside of Leonard, however, LA’s Norm Powell unsuccessfully tried to focus more on his scoring coming out of the game. Harden was also kept off the scorebook, as well. Denver ran at almost every opportunity to accumulate 15 fast break points through the stanza. After one solid play, Westbrook bricked or botched a handful of ensuing possessions. The Nuggets left the first up 31-25.

Denver’s offense stalled out completely and LA took advantage to tie the game. Threes from Porter, Jr., Murray, and Westbrook helped create some margin. Neither team, though could mount much of a run until LA’s stars, Leonard and Harden put up seven quick ones. More importantly, the Nuggets’ transition opportunities dried up completely in the second. Leonard and Harden’s heroics allowed the Clippers to go up three heading into the half.

As expected, the teams drew closer together at the start of the third and traded blows and leads over several highly entertaining minutes. Murray and Powell got into it in a contentious possession halfway through the third - seeing that I’m in Las Vegas this week with Wrestlemania happening - the Denver guard lifted the Clipper guard in the air and was halfway home to a suplex. The teams scuffled - literally and figuratively - until Nic Batum hit a corner three to put LA up seven. Jokic put up five points to bring the Nuggets within two heading into the fourth.

Observations

  • Patty Mills is on the Clippers! DeAndre Jordan is on the Nuggets! Another sad reminder of that Clippers / Spurs first-round series.
  • I’ve never seen a player like Ben Simmons who can’t seem to get out of his own mental way when it comes to seeking out his offense. Late in the first quarter, he drove Jokic deep enough into the paint to where Simmons could have laid the ball gently over the lip of the rim, but instead kicked it out to the wing.
  • Draymond Green’s TV daughter is a horrible shot; making them the worst shooting family in the NBA.
  • Derrick Jones, Jr. might shoot his team out of this series (which makes it weird since he had several good shooting games against the Spurs).
  • Sequence of the Game #1: Midway through the second period, Jokic handed it off to Murray, and when the point guard drew Clippers to him, he nifitly laid it off to Gordon for a dunk.
  • Sequence of the Game #2: Bogdan Bogdanovic, with Denver having a chance to re-take the lead, stole the ball from Westbrook and laid it off to Jones, Jr. for a soaring slam at the start of the fourth.

Game Rundown

The teams resumed their healter-skelter pace from Saturday. Murray and Porter, Jr. keyed a 7-0 run to put Denver up four early. There were no timeout stoppages until about six minutes in. Norm Powell tried to assert himself on offense, but had no luck. Leonard had a Jordanesque fadeaway and-1 to bring LA within one. Porter, Jr. had a transition lay-up countered by Ben Simmons of all people at the other end. While Jokic usually initiates the fast breaks, he was the recipient of a 3⁄4 court length pass for the easiest basket he’d get all night. Westbrook tipped an errant shot back in on one possession, and then turned it over on a drive the next time down. Jalen Pickett’s transition three put the Nuggets up nine. Harden’s first field goal came 11:09 into the game. Yet another entertaining quarter of action yielded a six point Denver lead.

Leonard hit his sixth shot in a row with Peyton Watson draped all over him. Jones, Jr. took a sloppy Murray pass all the way upcourt for a soaring layup. The Nuggets didn’t score for over three minutes, until Porter, Jr. and Murray connected from three. Leonard sandwiched two baskets around a Harden three to take the lead. Harden and Leonard, in particular, carried the LA offense in the closing moments and Leonard’s buzzer beating three put them up 55-52.

Gordon muscled home two buckets to start the third, but - who else - Leonard and Harden scored to grab the lead back for LA. Powell again tried to attack on offense and continued to struggle mightily. After Murray hit a three, Denver tried a zone, and Leonard hit a jumper anyway. The high quality play was interrupted by an altercation between Murray and Powell - and Kris Dunn, Christian Braun, and Powell (but NOT Murray) were assessed technicals. Harden’s three gave LA its biggest lead of the game of six. Jokic had a five-piont burst to end the third and the Clippers clung to a two point lead heading into the climactic finish.
