Final Score: Detroit Pistons outlast the New York Knicks 100-94
A bounce back game from playoff first-timer Cade Cunningham helps Detroit tie the series at 1 game apiece
The Detroit Pistons were determined not to beat themselves again tonight after their collapse in Game 1 against the New York Knicks. The game got out to a frantic start, with both teams going back and forth, pushing the ball and trading buckets. The first timeout didn’t come until the 4:50 mark, while neither team took free throws until Detroit center Jalen Duren went to the line with 57 seconds left in the frame. Detroit took advantage of some poor NYK bench play in the final minute to head into the 2nd with a 25-18 lead.
Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau brought the same lineup out to start the 2nd and as a result, Detroit was able to push their lead to 10. Jalen Brunson returned and steadied the offense for New York, but the Pistons were still able to keep the Knicks at arm’s length thanks to some aggressive play on offense and an inspired defensive effort that stifled any Knick not named Brunson. Mikal Bridges got it going, taking some of the heat off Brunson in the process, while New York found their own defensive footing as the quarter came to a close. The Knicks headed into the locker room at halftime fortunate to be down just 6 points.
The 2nd half got off to an extremely slow start, with both teams going 1/7 out of the locker room and the bulk of the scoring coming from the free throw line for the first few minutes of the 3rd quarter. Led by Cade Cunningham, Detroit settled down first, pushing their lead back to double digits with a little more than 6 minutes left in the quarter. For the Knicks it took their offense much longer to wake up, once again managing to grab hold of the rope and keep the game within striking distance heading into the 4th.
Not looking to see the Pistons push the lead back up to double digits to start the final frame, Thibs started the 4th with both Brunson and Towns out on the court. The issues that plagued New York to start the 3rd reared their head again, as the Knicks offense, relegated to heavy doses of isolation, found itself stifled against an aggressive Detroit defense. Some inevitable buckets from Brunson had New York within 4 though as the game entered its final minutes, setting the stage for an exciting finale. The Knicks managed to tie the game heading into the final minute of the game, only for Schroder to hit the biggest shot of the night to put the Pistons up 97-94. That ended up being the game winner, as the Knicks missed a few looks at a 3. The series heads to Detroit on Thursday all tied up at 1 game each.
Observations
- The Knicks had their starters out on the court the majority of the game, with three of them playing 40+ minutes. Playoff time means teams rely on their best players even more than usual, but there could be cause for concern going forward in regards to fatigue. Tom Thibodeau teams are notorious for starters playing high minutes, regardless of regular season of postseason.
- This was Detroit’s first playoff win since the 2008 postseason.
- Jalen Brunson at times looked like he could get by anyone on the Pistons. Numerous times in the first quarter he was able to beat aggressive Detroit traps and find his way into the paint. Brunson and Pistons guard Dennis Schroeder spent all game engaged in a very physical fight for possession that was extremely chippy on more than one occasion. Brunson was New York’s only efficient offense for large parts of the 2nd half, scoring 12 of his game-high 37 in the 4th quarter.
- There’s been a lot of talk about this being Cade Cunningham’s first time in the playoffs, with the noise only growing louder after a so-so performance in Game 1. Cunningham looked unfazed to start Game 2, getting off to a great start in this one. He had 20 points and 7 rebounds in the first half alone, finishing the game with 33 points and hitting some big shots in the process. Whatever the conversation going forward around Cunningham is, it surely won’t be about whether or not the stage is too big for him.
- It feels like almost all of Karl Anthony-Towns’ offense begins above the free throw line. KAT is a phenomenal shooter and is pretty adept at creating offense off the dribble so far away from the rim, getting into his post-ups. The Knicks needed much more from Towns, as he finished with just 10 points tonight.
- Detroit received a huge boost from their bench, which outscored the Knick bench 35-8 largely thanks to 20 from Schroder.
- One of the heroes of Game 1 for the Knicks, Cameron Payne picked up 3 fouls in less than 3 minutes in Game 2. Payne stayed on the bench for the rest of the game.
- The Pistons had a 14 free throw attempts in the first half compared to just 2 for the Knicks. They finished the game with 34 trips to the free throw line, while the Knicks had 19.
- After a big performance in the opening game, OG Anunoby was noticeably quiet on the offensive end to start Game 2. Anunoby had just 4 points in the first half, but his effort on defense was evident from the jump. Anunoby is an incredibly versatile defender, capable of switching onto any position should the situation call for it.
- Tobias Harris got off to a hot start in Game 1 and it was a similar story tonight. Detroit went to a 2-man action to get Harris the ball at the elbows on offense, while he was part of an impressive Pistons performance on the glass, one of three Pistons to register double digit boards.
