Western Conference Play-In Finale: Grizzlies maul haggard Mavericks 120-106 and move on to face OKC
Despite Ja Morant’s off-shooting night, there were more than enough contributions to go around in Memphis’ Play-in win
Memphis seized hold of an early dougle-digit lead - doing most of the damage in the lane - and dictated the pace and tempo of this play-in game. A Mavericks team missing the one creative genius that could have truly impacted this game - Kyrie Irving - instead over-relied on Anthony Davis, spotty jumpshooting, and failed to maintain pace with the ceiling of Memphis’ offensive attack. Davis became more hobbled by a rash of injuries throughout his 37 minutes - leaving Dallas increasingly punchless.
Ja Morant (22 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals) received a heroes welcome home in the dominant win for Memphis tonight where all five starters made it to double-digits. Jaren Jackson, Jr. (27 points and 7 rebounds) and Desmond Bane (22 points and 9 assists) and capably filled the non-Morant minutes. Santi Aldama (11 points) chipped in nicely off the bench in that runaway first half and rookies Zach Edey (15 points and 11 rebounds) competed well against the more heralded Mavs’ frontline.
The man traded for Luke Doncic, Davis (40 points and 9 rebounds) produced at a superstar level, but did not receive enough support early on to seriously threaten the victorious Grizzlies. Klay Thompson (18 points) was the only other starter of consequence, and another former Laker, Max Christie (11 points) and Brandon Willliams (16 points) were the sole perimeter players with contributions in the loss.
The teams put up bunches of points in the first minutes of the game. Thompson picked up where he left off from Sacramento and hit a pair of threes (until he missed the next six). Morant made his presence felt to draw fouls and keep the Grizzlies’ spacing sufficient, while Jackson, Jr. benefitted from his passes to hit from the left corner. Despite his foul trouble, Davis still managed to put up half of Dallas’ points ten minutes into game action. Dallas finished the lopsided first quarter up down 15.
Whatever chance the Mavericks had to meaningfully close the gap on Memphis quickly evapored, as Bane and Jackson, Jr. crafted an 8-0 run to make it 47-24. Davis started hitting shots on the move, but Dallas could not get closer than 20 for some time. Bane took the shot-making mantle in the second quarter minutes and Memphis continued to stay comfortably ahead. After going down 41-66, the Mavericks again mounted a run to get themselves within 17 at the half.
Davis continue his one-man assault on the scoresheet, and received some essential support from his secondary smaller guys. Memphis’ offense stalled out in the middle minutes, and the Mavericks closed to within as close as seven. However, Jackson, Jr. looked for his own shot successfully late in the frame, and the Grizzlies went to the fourth up 96-78.
Observations
- It might be time for Pop to enjoy the considerable inventory in his wine cellars.
- The white Vancouver Grizzlies jerseys were chef’s kiss.
- At one point during the first half romp, Memphis has 20 points in the paint and 21 from three. #modernoffensivebalance
- Sequence of the Game #1: Aldama bricked a floater late in the opening stanza, and as a quickly-moving body came into focus on the screen… Morant threw down a thunderous tip slam to put Memphis up 15.
- Showoff Sequence of the Game: Late in the opening half, Morant, after a steal from Davis, twirled and whirled towards the basket and dropped a dime to Aldama, who did a 270 (won’t give him credit for 360) degree dunk.
Game Rundown
Morant, on his tender ankle, nabbed an errant Mavericks’ pass and that led to an opening corner three from Jackson, Jr. His first shot, however, went about six feet to the right of the hoop. Scotty Pippen, Jr. lofted a floater home, and disrupted the next Dallas possession to force a turnover. Jackson, Jr. hit a shot from that exact spot to put Memphis up seven. Thompson had two threes of his own from opposite wings. Edey’s tip-in put Memphis up a baker’s dozen. A transition three from Aldama inflated the Grizzlies lead to 21. Dallas cobbled together a closing 8-2 run and found themselves down 15.
Bane flowed into two good looks from distance and knocked them down with ease. Memphis went up by 25 - with Morant getting extended rest on the bench. Dallas futilely tried a zone for one possession and Jackson, Jr. connected from the soft spot in the middle of it. Even when the Mavericks hit shots, they were often countered at the other end by easier Memphis shots in the paint. The second quarter wrapped up much like the first one, in that Dallas steadied itself too late again. Memphis went to the break up 66-49.
Davis and Jackson, Jr. went at each other to start the third period. The Mavericks’ 7-0 run was capped off by a Davis three in transition to draw within ten. Thompson began to warm up again from the field, while Memphis’ Edey had two buckets from point-blank range and swatted away a Davis attempt that would have brought Dallas within seven. Yet Davis received a long outlet pass on the next possession and threw down a dunk. John Konchar put up a quick five point flurry, and while Morant’s shot was not going down, he set up his teammates expertly. Brandon Williams’ and-1 allowed Dallas to creep closer again. Just like in the first half, Jackson, Jr. hit a pair of threes from the left side to increase the advantage to 15. Despite the firm push that Dallas gave the Grizzlies, Memphis went to the fourth still up 18.
