De’Aaron Fox eyes signing extension with Spurs this offseason
De’Aaron Fox expressed optimism that he will be signing a lucrative extension with the Spurs in the offseason.
“Yeah, I would hope so. … I’m excited about what we’re trying to build here,” he said.
Fox has one more year remaining on the five-year $163 million max extension he signed with the Sacramento Kings in November 2020 that will pay him $37.1 million in 2025-26. He’s eligible for a four-year $229 million extension this summer.
In the meantime, he plans to continue his rehabilitation after undergoing season-ending surgery in mid-March to repair the extensor tendon in his left pinkie finger. The Spurs acquired Fox on Feb. 3 in a blockbuster three-team trade.
“I should be cleared in another eight (weeks), but I’ll be able to start doing basketball stuff in the next two,” Fox said. “It’s definitely progressing. I got the stitches out, the wound is closing and I’m just trying to keep it as straight as possible for the time being. I wear a splint all the time now, but I feel good.”
Fox said he looks forward to working out with Victor Wembanyama, who has been sidelined since Feb. 20 due to a blood clot in his right shoulder, this summer. Fox said they are on pace to be cleared to play at the same time.
“We want to be the best pick and roll combo in the league,” Fox said. “We have two guys that are extremely dynamic, can pick and choose our spots whenever we want. And if you’re able to really put together that type of combination, I feel like it is going to be a hard thing to stop. So, having this summer to be able to work together is definitely good.”
