The Spurs have locked in Victor Wembanyama’s highest-profile running mate through the rest of the decade.
All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox on Monday agreed to a four-year, $229-million contract extension that will keep him under the Spurs’ control through the 2029-2030 season.
Acquired from Sacramento at the February trade deadline to serve as an explosive pick-and-roll partner alongside Wembanyama, the 27-year-old Fox averaged 19.7 points in his first 17 games with the Spurs.
Fox’s new deal was not unexpected, even as the Spurs used the No. 2 pick in the June draft to select another dynamic pick-and-roll guard in Rutgers phenom Dylan Harper.
As his seven-plus seasons in Sacramento began to sour, Fox pushed for a trade to the Spurs for a specific reason.
“I think with the way that they’re built with the athleticism, with the length they have,” said Fox, who before the extension was slated to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. “I just felt like this could be a special team.”
Fox played with Wembanyama for only five games last season, as the latter suffered a season-ending blood clot issue at the All-Star break.
It was a small sample size, but enough to encourage the Spurs to go all-in on their new point guard as they aim to halt a six-season hiatus from the playoffs.
It was also enough to give Wembanyama ample encouragement about the future of the duo.
“He just brings a lot to the table for us,” Wembanyama said last season. “Our goals are even more attainable. We get to use all our strengths and we just added a big strength.”
Fox himself was shut down in March to undergo season-ending surgery to repair a damaged ligament in his left pinky finger. Fox is expected to be fully recovered in time for training camp, with a fatter contract to boot.
Wembanyama likewise has been cleared for basketball activities and should be ready for camp. If so, Fox and Wembanyama plan to pick up where they left off after last season’s all-too-brief cameo together.
“We want be the best pick-and-roll combo in the league," Fox said last season. “We are two guys who are extremely dynamic, can pick and choose our spots whenever we want.”
Fox’s contract extension was the maximum amount the Spurs were allowed to offer under the league’s collective bargaining agreement, cementing the club’s commitment to him as a cornerstone.
“His resume speaks for itself,” coach Mitch Johnson said upon Fox’s arrival in February. “He’s a top player in this league, both ends of the floor, dynamic in every sense of the word.”
One of the league’s speediest lead guards, Fox has averaged at least 23 points in five consecutive seasons.
He was named to the All-NBA team in 2023, the same season he was selected to his first All-Star game. Fox led the league in steals in 2023-24, and in 2021-22 earned the NBA’s inaugural Jerry West Clutch Player of the Year award.
Now locked up for the long haul, Fox spearheads a deepening Spurs backcourt rotation that is also set to include Harper and second-year guard Stephon Castle, last season’s NBA Rookie of the Year.
The question of how it all fits together can only begin to be answered when the team reconvenes for training camp next month.
The question of how to eventually pay all of those guards – plus Wembanyama, who is due for a record-breaking extension next summer – can only be answered over the months and years to come.
For now, Johnson would file the issue of too many talented guards under the heading of “good problem to have.”
With Monday’s news of Fox’s extension, the Spurs’ future took another step toward taking shape.
“We have a hold on the direction and want to build upon something,” Johnson said.
