San Antonio vs. Phoenix, Final Score: Spurs lose their final road game of the season, 98-117

NBA: San Antonio Spurs at Phoenix Suns

Phoenix had a picnic from deep in the paint and from behind the arc in its runaway victory tonight

The Spurs, missing a procession of rotation players including Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson from Wednesday night’s victory, could not hold a ten point first half lead and lost the game in regretful second and third quarter efforts that saw the Suns outshine San Antonio 64-31. Phoenix dominated the Spurs on the boards (51-40) to get second chance opportunities throughout the opening half, and connected at-will from all over the floor in a 39-point third period.

San Antonio wrapped up the road portion of their campaign with a 13-27 record. Stephon Castle (16 points and 10 assists) and Julian Champagnie (23 points, career high six 3’s) provided an opening punch for the Spurs that was outmatched by Phoenix over the last three quarters. Sandro Mamukelashvili (19 points and 9 rebounds) had a pleasant evening off the bench.

Rookie Ryan Dunn assumed Phoenix teammate Kevin Durant’s mantle - at least in the shot taking responsibilities - and led his team with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Devin Booker (18 points and 5 assists) and Bradley Beal (21 points and 6 assists) outshot their counterparts in those crushing second and third quarters.

Rookie of the Year favorite Stephon Castle led the Spurs attack with perfect shooting (5-for-5) and sublime playmaking to stake the visitors to an early lead. All five of Castle’s field goals brimmed with swaggy confidence. Veterans Beal and Booker provided most of the Suns’ scoring, while Dunn put up more attempts (nine) than any other player on the floor! Mamukelashvili came in with three minutes left and immediately made his presence felt with two thunderous drives that netted a dunk and an and-1. Castle’s wing three put San Antonio up five exiting the frame.

A promising start to the quarter that saw Malaki Branham knock down two field goals quickly deteriorated and Phoenix’s guards Beal and Tyus Jones led a sustained response to erase their 10-point deficit. Dunn continued his torrid shot-chucking pace, but it was Booker’s jumper put Phoenix up five late in the half. Champagnie’s two jumpers were the only baskets over the last half of the stanza and Phoenix headed to the half up 53-47.

Dunn’s shot finally started finding its way consistently in the third as he had a personal eight point eruption to help Phoenix push their lead to 13. A parade of Phoenix players hit from three to push that margin out to 29. The exhausted and toothless Spurs had no answer, and Mitch Johnson emptied the bench at the 3:29 mark.

Observations

  • The game-winning play from Wednesday night was reminiscent of the Manu Ginobili feed to Tim Duncan and game-winner over Vitaly Potapenko in Game 6 of the 2005 WCSF against Seattle. #Iammiddleaged
  • Phoenix must lead the way in number of name changes in the past generation: America West to US Airways Center to Talking Stick Resort Center to Footprint Center to PHX arena.
  • Spurs / Raptors Sunday is the only inter-conference match-up Sunday. Weird.
  • Sequence of the Game: Champagnie stepped into an errant Suns pass on the opening possession, and was the recipient downcourt from Castle for a knockdown three. Perfect open!

Game Rundown

Champagnie set a positive tone with two smooth-looking threes from the tip. Sun’s wing Dunn put up a FULL GAME’S WORTH of shot attempts in his first quarter time (nine in 8+ minutes). Castle connected on two nice jumpers early on. Champagnie’s third make from behind the arc was rewarded with an and-1 and the sequence put San Antonio up six. Castle resembled prime DeRozan and continued hitting from the purple area to help the Spurs keep the lead. Beal and Booker hit from the left corner to counter. An unforced error by San Antonio freed up Booker for a transition three which put them ahead briefly. Plentiful second-chance opportunities enabled Phoenix to keep things close. Castle’s perfect-shooting first quarter and Mamukelashivili’s aggression aided the Spurs to go up 33-28.

A catch-and-shoot three and driving lay-up by Malaki Branham gave the Spurs its biggest lead of the game at 38-28. Grayson Allen put on his own shotmaking display to cut into the lead. The pace remained ultra fast, but the shooting dried up over an alarming number of minutes. A rampaging lay-up by Mamukelashvili put San Antonio back up nine, but they stayed agonizingly stuck to that ‘42’ mark for a handful of minutes. Champagnie’s fourth three momentarily stunted the comeback, but Beal and Tyus Jones led the way to nudge the Suns back ahead. The Suns’ run coincided with Castle’s bench rest. Champagnie’s fifth bucket again briefly interrupted a Phoenix burst, but San Antonio found itself down six at the half.

The torrid pace continued to carry the day in the third, as Blake Wesley and Mamukelashvili took the place of Harrison Barnes and Chris Paul. Mamukelashvili’s post jumper was outshined by a pair of threes from the aforementioned Dunn. Dunn’s transition dunk gave the Suns their biggest lead at 11, and that energized the others to run a lay-up line to build on that cushion. Phoenix then changed its point of attack to the three and Grayson Allen, Booker, and Beal peppered away from distance to extend it out to an insurmountable advantage. Harrison Ingram and David Duke, Jr. were brought in before the fourth quarter to see what they could do with some minutesa. Mamukelashvili’s turnaround buzzer-beater shaved the deficit to 28.
