Spurs begin final trip of season after rallying to nearly beat Cavs
San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) shoots against Cleveland Cavaliers’ Max Strus, top left, and Evan Mobley (4) during the first half of an NBA basketball game, Friday, April 4, 2025, in San Antonio.
PORTLAND – Acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson wanted to see his team rewarded for valiantly fighting back from a 23-point deficit against East-leading Cleveland.
Unfortunately for the Spurs and Johnson, Harrison Barnes’ contested running hook didn’t fall, allowing the Cavaliers to escape with a 114-113 win Friday night at the Frost Bank Center.
“They fought their butts off. … You wish the ball would’ve bounced in for their sake because they put so much into this deal,” Johnson said.
Barnes hit consecutive 3-pointers to cap a furious 14-2 closing run and pull the Spurs within a point with 28.6 seconds left. Johnson drew up the play that nearly won the game in a timeout after Cleveland’s Darius Garland misfired from deep at the shot-clock buzzer with 4.6 seconds left.
Barnes put the ball up over Max Strus, but it bounced out after hitting back iron.
“Four seconds, got to the front of the rim, missed a layup,” Barnes said. “Not too much to think about.”
“I’d give Harrison that shot any night,” Spurs point guard Chris Paul said. “You probably make it nine out of 10 times.”
The Spurs (32-45) start a four-game trip - their final one of the season - at Portland (34-44) Sunday in a game that could have lottery implications.
Cleveland, which never trailed, led by 23 points late in the first half and by 16 with eight minutes left.
San Antonio Spurs forward Harrison Barnes (40) drives past Cleveland Cavaliers guard Max Strus (1) during the second half of their NBA game at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Friday, April 4, 2025. Cleveland beat the Spurs 114-113.
Devin Vassell led the Spurs (32-45) with 24 points. Barnes had 23 and rookie Stephon Castle had 22 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds to come close for the second straight game to collecting his first triple-double.
“I thought I had it this game,” Castle said. “I don’t know who was at the scorer’s table. I thought I had it (another rebound) at the end of this game.”
Donovan Mitchell led the Cavaliers (62-15) with 26 points. Evan Mobley had 25 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and three blocks.
Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan (back) missed his third game in a row.
“He has not been ruled out for the season, but those backs can be pesky, to say the least, and we’ll be mindful of that and very conservative,” Johnson said.
