3 takeaways as Spurs’ comeback spoiled in loss to Cavs
San Antonio Spurs forward Harrison Barnes (40) tries to put in the game winning shot just before the final buzzer after hitting two 3-pointers to put the Spurs within one point during the second half of their NBA game at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Friday, April 4, 2025. Cleveland beat the Spurs 114-113.
Spurs forward Harrison Barnes spun between a pair of defenders with time running down Friday, found a clear enough path to the goal, and everyone in the Frost Bank Center prepared to celebrate.
So sure was Sandro Mamukelashvili his teammate was about to make the winning basket, that he went to hug Barnes even before the ball had dropped.
As the ball bounced off the rim, the final horn sounding on a hard-fought 114-113 loss to Cleveland, Mamukelashvili was already past the point of no return.
“I hugged him anyway,” Mamukelashvili said. “It was supposed to be a celebration hug, but it felt like a confrontational hug.”
Barnes’ miss at the rim, with Cavaliers forward Max Strus closing, proved an anti-climatic end to what had been a furious Spurs rally.
The Spurs trailed Cleveland — which won its 62nd game — by as many as 23 points in the first half and by 16 in the fourth quarter.
A game-closing 14-2 run, of which Barnes was a huge part, put the Spurs on the cusp of their biggest comeback victory of the season.
“These guys have found a way to not go away numerous times, and that just speaks to them individually and as a group,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “It’s very rewarding as a coach to have that kind of fight in your team.”
Donovan Mitchell had 26 points to lead the Cavs, while Evan Mobley chipped in a monster 25 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.
Devin Vassell paced the Spurs with 24 points, including six 3-pointers, while rookie Stephon Castle again made eyes at a triple-double as he finished with 22 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds.
Barnes tossed in 23 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers to pull the Spurs within a point with 28.6 seconds remaining.
The Spurs snuffed out Cleveland’s final possession, with Chris Paul stripping the ball from Mitchell and Darius Garland misfiring on a long 3-pointer at the shot-clock buzzer.
That set the stage for Barnes to possibly play the hero.
“I’ll give Harrison that shot any night,” Paul said. “You probably make it nine out of 10 times.”
Not this time.
“Four seconds, got to the front of the rim, missed a layup,” Barnes said. “Not too much to think about.”
Said Johnson: “You wish that ball would’ve bounced in for their sake because they put so much into this deal.”
Here are three takeaways from Friday’s defeat, which dropped the Spurs to 32-45 heading into their final road trip of the season:
1. Castle’s controversial non-triple-double
For the second game in row, Castle came tantalizingly close to posting his first career triple-double.
Two nights earlier in Denver, the NBA’s presumptive Rookie of the Year recorded 15 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists in a Spurs victory.
Castle was one rebound shy Friday, and could argue he was robbed by the home scorer’s table.
“I thought I had it this game,” he said.
The play Castle and some of the Spurs would argue should have produced his 10th rebound came late in the fourth quarter. Paul was stripped while — at least according to him — trying to attempt a shot. The errant ball landed in Castle’s hand.
San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) shoots over Cleveland Cavaliers forward Evan Mobley (4) during the second half of their NBA game at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Friday, April 4, 2025. Cleveland beat the Spurs 114-113.
Scorekeepers ruled the play a loose ball instead of a shot attempt, which meant no rebound for Castle.
After the game, the Spurs reached out to the league to have them review the play for a possible 10th rebound.
Triple-double or no, the Spurs were pleased with Castle’s performance.
“For a young player to be able to do that against that type of competition and that type of a game, back and forth,” Johnson said, “it just says something about his growth.”
There was one other play late that might have resulted in Castle’s 10th rebound, when Garland threw up a prayer of a 3-pointer near the end of the shot clock. That attempt hit only glass and landed in Castle’s mitts just after the 24-second horn sounded.
It correctly went down as shot-clock turnover, which meant no rebound.
2. Against the Cavs, intensity non-negotiable
As nice as it was for the Spurs to fight out of a 23-point hole against a team that could be playing for a championship in June, it would have been nicer to avoid such a deficit to begin with.
That is the lesson the Spurs’ veterans hope the team takes from the loss.
“Obviously we had a chance to win it at the end,” Barnes said. “The deficit we created in the first half, that’s where the growth opportunity is for us.”
The Spurs put up little resistance in the first half, as Cleveland shot its way to a 67-50 halftime lead on the back of 15 3-pointers.
Mobley already had 19 points at that juncture, making 7 of 8 field goals. De’Andre Hunter had poured in 13 off the Cavaliers’ bench.

It was Bismack Biyombo, of all people, who got the Spurs’ attention in the locker room at the break.
“Bismack said it best,” Barnes said. “For us to execute the game plan, or know if we’re doing it right, we have to do it with more intensity. That’s what changed for us in the second half.”
The Spurs were better in that area after the break. The urgency crested in the fourth, when the Spurs closed with a fervent run to give themselves a chance at a last-second victory.
They left the Frost Bank Center wondering what might have been had their intensity kicked in a little earlier.
3. Chris Paul’s evaluation of Blake Wesley
With De’Aaron Fox on the shelf recovering from finger surgery and Tre Jones in Chicago — having been shipped out in the Fox trade — third-year point guard Blake Wesley has been given ample opportunity as the Spurs’ backup point guard.
A dogged defender and unparalleled speedster, Wesley on occasion looks like a player who can help in the Spurs’ rotation going forward. And occasionally, he reminds of why he had been left out of the rotation when the roster was whole.
Friday marked a little bit of both.
\
His energy and determination were there. His speed, as usual, helped create advantages for teammates. He grabbed two steals.
“The way he plays when he plays is contagious,” said Paul, the team’s resident point guard guru. “He’s a two-way player. He defends, he plays hard and when you got somebody who defends like that, you going to live or die with any issues.”
Those issues were also on display Friday.
Wesley finished 0-for-7, including 0 of 4 from 3-point range, and did not log an assist.
While Wesley had put in hours of work on his outside shot, Paul believes he could benefit by expanding his arsenal in the paint and around the rim.
“His speed is his weapon,” Paul said. “So if he continues to get in the lane and get different finishes, floaters and whatever, now you become so hard to guard.”
