Johnson lone bright spot in blowout loss

On a dreadful night in which his teammates seemed to be stuck in mud, Keldon Johnson was his usual high-energy self.

The sixth-year Spurs forward had a team-high 19 points on 8 of 13 from the floor in 21 minutes, a performance that ranked as one of the few positives in the Spurs’ embarrassing 148-106 drubbing at the hands of the Golden State Warriors on Sunday.

The margin of defeat was the largest of the season for the Spurs, eclipsing the 38-point loss to Indiana on Jan. 25 in Paris. It matched the sixth-worst loss in franchise history.

But Johnson played as hard as ever in capping a strong month for him individually. With 249 points over 17 games, he led the NBA in total bench points, topping even Sixth Man of the Year frontrunner Payton Pritchard (198 points) of Boston.

It was Johnson’s 49th double-digit scoring game of the season and the 11th time he led the Spurs in scoring, including the last two games in a row after he had 23 in Saturday’s 121-111 loss to Boston.

“He just seems very, very content in his role, in his place on the team, and it’s fun to watch somebody (thrive) who has been asked to do a lot at a young age (25) and has had a lot of different roles, whether it was his choice or not,” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “It’s a testament to the character he has.”

Keldon Johnson moved to the bench last season after starting 204 of the 207 games he played in the previous three seasons. In addition to giving up his starting role, the longest-tenured active Spur also willingly surrendered his No. 3 jersey to Chris Paul and donned No. 0 after the Spurs signed the future Hall of Famer last summer.

“Keldon probably doesn’t get enough credit at time for all the things he has sacrificed,” Mitch Johnson said. “Whether it’s lineups or minutes or roles or jersey numbers, he’s done it all, and he’s done it all with nothing but the same fearlessness, loyalty and waving the Spurs flag as much as anybody.”

Keldon Johnson said it hasn’t always been easy going through so many changes.

“It takes a lot to be able to adjust to different things, but I that’s what I take pride in,” said the Kentucky alumnus, who was selected 29th overall by the Spurs in the 2019 NBA Draft.

“Being able to do so many different things to help my team be successful, help my team win, that’s what I really take pride in, that and being able to be a Swiss Army knife,” said the Virginia native, who will enter Tuesday night’s home game against Orlando averaging 12.8 points per game.

His teammates appreciate how he’s adapted to different roles - all the while playing with his trademark vigor.

“Keldon’s been great,” Harrison Barnes said. “He’s definitely one of the higher-energy guys. He’s a lively spark for us in the locker room and a spark for us on the court. It’s been great to just see him continue to build off good performance after good performance.”

Bassey returns after latest knee issue

Eight seconds into the fourth quarter in his first action in nearly a month, Spurs backup center Charles Bassey blocked a hook shot by Quinten Post.

The swat was the highlight of Bassey’s first game after missing the previous 18 with a bone bruise in his left knee. The block drew a joyful reaction from teammates who have been rooting hard for the San Antonio St. Anthony alumnus to get back on the court.

“Injuries are difficult and they take you out of your rhythm, and he’s worked extremely hard to get back,” Barnes said.

Logging all of his 10 minutes in the fourth quarter long after the game had been decided, Bassey also had a rebound and a foul in his return.

Knee problems have plagued Bassey for much of his three seasons with the Spurs.

Last season, Bassey underwent season-ending surgery after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in December 2023 while playing in a game for the Spurs’ G League affiliate in Austin. He also missed six other games last month after he sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

Mitch Johnson praised Bassey for persevering through all the adversity. The Spurs have ruled Bassey out for Tuesday’s game because he hasn’t been cleared yet for back-to-backs, but he’s expected to be active again when they play at Denver on Wednesday night.

“He’s done everything we’ve asked,” Johnson said. "When you go back to the start of this deal and see what he’s really been through in terms of rehabbing and putting in work and time, it’s tough. And it probably doesn’t get discussed enough in this league or in professional sports, the mental part of when you’re out and you’re away from the team and are (thinking about whether) you are going to be who you were before (the injury).

“Charles is a player that’s been surviving. He doesn’t have a 10-year guaranteed contract, and so you are happy when guys like that make it through to the other side and are available and can kind of continue to prove why they are a part of this league.”

Bassey, a 24-year-old native of Nigeria, said his love of the game and the Spurs is what motivated him to fight through all his knee issues.

“I just want to play with these guys, man,” he said. “My family, my friends, people in my circle, know who I am as a person. They know I want to get back and play, even though I’m not feeling all right, not really feeling myself. I just want to be out there with these guys and just help the team in any way I can.”
