3 Takeaways as Warriors pummel Spurs
A little more than an hour before tipoff Sunday at the Frost Bank Center, Golden State coach Steve Kerr was asked a question he never saw coming.
Would Stephen Curry be available to face the Spurs that night?
“The question surprised me there,” Kerr said, momentarily forgetting his All-Star guard had been listed on the Warriors’ injury report with a pelvic contusion. “I guess everyone is questionable every day.”
Curry was indeed available for the Warriors on Sunday, but it frankly might not have mattered had he opted to watch the game from the patio of a Riverwalk bar.
With Curry playing a bit part – and Brandin Podziemski playing the role usually occupied by Curry – the Warriors blasted the Spurs 148-106.
No, that is not a misprint.
The margin of defeat was the largest of the season for the Spurs, topping a 38-point loss to Indiana in Paris. It matched the sixth-worst defeat in club history.
Podziemski buried a career-best seven 3-pointers on his way to 27 points, as the Warriors rolled to the most points allowed by the Spurs this season.
Moses Moody added 20 points and Buddy Hield had 19 off the bench for Golden State.
“I thought they executed and they played at a high level and they didn’t have any lapses,” said Spurs forward Harrison Barnes, who in 2016 won an NBA championship with the Warriors. “That’s something we can learn from. Obviously turnovers, shock, quality, communication, defensive breakdowns, different things like that that happened at certain times. When you’re playing against good teams, they capitalize.”
The Warriors’ wire-to-wire victory allowed Curry to play an easy-does-it 26 minutes, scoring 13 points with six assists. Early in the second quarter, Golden State led by 19 points with Curry accounting for two of them.
Curry’s first bomb of 3-pointer came with 5:34 remaining in the second quarter. It gave him five points and the Warriors a 20-point advantage.
The blowout nature of the loss left the Spurs searching for silver linings afterward. Forward Sandro Mamukelashvili found one.
“I’m going home to pet my dogs,” he said. “They still love me.”
Here are three takeaways from Sunday’s humbling defeat, which gave the Spurs a four-game losing streak and dipped their record to 31-43:
1. Early line change changed little
The game got out of hand early, with Golden State leaping out to a 19-6 lead on a Butler layup at the 7:37 mark of the first quarter.
Acting coach Mitch Johnson called a timeout and pushed the Popovichian button of replacing every starter who remained on the floor.
Keldon Johnson had already entered the game off the bench. The motley crew of Jordan McLaughlin, Blake Wesley, Julian Champagnie and Sandro Mamukelashvili soon joined him on the court.
“Just trying to get some energy, grab some guys’ attention,” Mitch Johnson said. “It was a hard-fought game last night and the team we were playing tonight, we knew we had zero margin for error. Just trying to kind of keep our grips on the game early and try to get settled.”
It didn’t necessarily work out that way.
The Spurs trailed 44-27 at the end of the first quarter and never made the Warriors perspire. Late in the fourth quarter, Golden State led by 47 – which would have tied the most lopsided loss in Spurs history had the margin stayed there.
The first possession of the game proved prophetic, as Butler slipped backdoor for a layup between a confused Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan.
That gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead they never relinquished.
“I thought we were a little overreactive,” Mitch Johnson said. “And they are as advanced as anybody in this league, for as long as they’ve been together, at punishing you when you react to something too early.”
The Spurs’ defensive performance Sunday was disappointing to say the least.
“They warned us there would be a lot of off-the-ball movement,” Mamukelashvili said. “We got scored on on almost every single one of them.”
2. 3-point record
With 4:56 remaining in the third quarter, Keldon Johnson buried a non-descript 3-pointer that cut the Spurs’ deficit to 93-68.
It also made a little bit of Spurs’ history.
The bucket was the Spurs’ 1,037th 3-pointer of the season, snapping the franchise record set last season.
It is a record the Spurs, who for years lurked near the bottom of the league rankings in terms of 3-point shooting, believe is made to be broken again.
“That’s what everyone is hunting,” Barnes said. “That’s how 90% of the teams are constructed now, three or four guys who are 6-4 to 6-10 that can shoot threes.”
As far as the Spurs have come with the 3-ball, they still have some room to grow.
Now with 1,042 made 3-pointers, the Spurs rank eighth in the league in that category. Their conversion rate, at 35.5%, ranks 19th.
Still, if the Spurs can hold where they are it would mark the first time in club history to finish in the top 10 in the league in 3-pointers made.
3. Charles Bassey is back!
It wasn’t exactly the equivalent of the cavalry arriving, but the Spurs got Charles Bassey back from the injured list Sunday.
The 6-10 big man saw his first minutes since Feb. 23, having been on the shelf with a bone bruise in his left knee.
Bassey didn’t enter until the dregs of fourth quarter garbage time, and blocked Golden State’s Quinten Post within minutes of checking in.
Bassey finished his 10-minute shift scoreless with a block and a rebound.
“It’s just another piece to have another available body, which is always nice,” Johnson said. “We haven’t been too rigid or consistent with rotations and lineups, so I think we’ll just kind of play it by ear. But it’s nice to have him back.”
It has been something of a lost season for the 24-year-old Bassey, who has appeared in only 35 contests during an injury plagued campaign.
But for the bone bruise, Bassey might have had a golden opportunity for playing time once Victor Wembanyama was lost for the season in mid-February.
“Charles is a player that’s been surviving,” Johnson said. “He doesn’t have a 1o-year guaranteed contract, so you are happy when guys like that make it through to the other side and can kind of continue to prove why they are a part of this league.”
