Redick a big fan of Wembanyama
San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama and guard Chris Paul pose after autographing their jersey with Kai and Knox, children of Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick after an NBA basketball game Monday, Jan. 13, 2025, in Los Angeles.
Lakers coach JJ Redick offered well-wishes to Victor Wembanyama when asked before Monday’s game about facing the Spurs without the 21-year-old Frenchman after his season ended Feb. 20 due to a blood clot in his right shoulder.
“I wish him well and hopefully he’s back on the court very soon and doesn’t have a long-term issue,” said Redick, who coached Los Angeles to a 125-109 win over the Spurs.
“Just a great human, a great player, and just a great representative of our league,” Redick added. “Got to know him a little bit and I feel for him.”
Redick met Wembanyama before the 2023 NBA Draft when the 7-foot-3 center, who eventually was drafted No. 1 overall by the Spurs, was a guest on the former NBA player’s “The Old Man and The Three” podcast.
“I was really struck by his maturity and thoughtfulness,” Redick said. “There are a lot of people in any industry that are talented and have success or are going to have success, and they’re looking for, ‘What can I get?’ rather than ‘What can I give?’ And he’s a giver, a what-can-I-give person.”
Redick’s fondness for Wembanyama grew after the 7-foot-3 center and Spurs point guard Chris Paul gave their autographed game jerseys to Redick’s sons, Knox and Kai, after the Spurs defeated the Lakers 126-102 Jan. 13 in Los Angeles.
It was a feel-good moment after the brothers had lost their sports memorabilia collection in the Pacific Palisades fire that destroyed the Redicks’ home and forced the Jan. 11 game between the Spurs and the Lakers to be postponed until Monday night.
But Redick stressed his fondness for Wembanyama doesn’t just just stem from that gesture of kindness.
“I’m close with a lot of people in the Spurs front office,” he said. “I hear all the stories. He’s one of one.”
Wembanyama is expected to make a full recovery by the start of the 2025-26 season, the Spurs have said.
Sochan tossed for fighting
Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan had 15 points off the bench in 26 minutes before he was ejected along with the Lakers’ Jarred Vanderbilt for fighting with 6:27 left in Monday’s game.
The brief skirmish started when Sochan flung the ball at Vanderbilt after the forward got whistled for shoving Sochan. They briefly squared off before teammates, coaches and security separated them.
Both players were tossed after getting slapped with technical fouls following a review by the officials.
“I thought it was a bump (by Vanderbilt) and the basketball throw (by Sochan) and some macho stuff that was really nothing,” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “I thought they could have called a double tech and moved on. I didn’t think they needed to be ejected, but maybe they wanted to de-escalate the situation.”

Wesley getting minutes after long wait
Spurs guard Blake Wesley logged 22 minutes against the Lakers, marking the second time in the past three games he has played 20 or more after averaging just 4.6 in the 20 games he appeared in from Dec. 15 through March 10.
Wesley, who gained more playing time after the Spurs declared De’Aaron Fox out for the season on March 13 due to a damaged tendon in his left pinkie, had seven points, five assists, three rebounds, two steals and a block against the Lakers.
Johnson praised Wesley for having a positive attitude and working hard during the months he wasn’t in the rotation.
“We understand the frustration,” Johnson said. “Everybody wants to play, we want to play everybody. But you kind of have to work while you wait. And he’s done that, and he’s been chomping at the bit, and it’s been fun to see him have an opportunity to get out there and mix it up and show all the work he’s been putting in.”
NBA TV drops game
The NBA announced Monday that Friday’s game between Philadelphia and the Spurs at the Frost Bank Center will no longer be televised by NBA TV.
The game will be televised locally by FanDuel Sports Network.
