Mamukelashvili ‘watching his back’ after playing car prank on Castle
As the mastermind behind the prank that removed the wheels from Spurs star rookie Stephon Castle’s Toyota GR Supra sports car, Sandro Mamukelashvili is taking extra precautions to protect his ride.
“I say it in front of the cameras, I’m not safe,” Mamukelashvili joked. "I’ve been hiding my keys for the past two days. … I’m probably going to make sure I’m watching my back for the next couple of games until he cools off a little bit, and then I’ll be fine.
Mamukelashvili revealed after shootaround Friday all the planning that went into pulling off the Castle car caper and what led to it.
The bottom line as to why Castle found his Supra out of commission in the players parking lot after Wednesday night’s win over Dallas at the Frost Bank Center was he needed to be taught a lesson, Mamukelashivili said.
"He had a few rookie (obligations) he was kind of struggling with and I was telling him throughout the whole year, ‘Yo, bro, you got to do it because I’m going to take your wheels off,’ " said Mamukelashvili, a fourth-year player. “And he was like, I’ll take your wheels off. It was basically a back-and-forth game where I would tell him something, he would tell me something.”

Finally fed up with the upstart 20-year-old, Mamukelashvili contacted a council of veterans - Chris Paul, Harrison Barnes and Keldon Johnson - and team security to get the OK to prank Castle. Once he received their blessing, he said he reached out to “my guy” Luis Cabrera Jr. at United Collision Car Care for assistance with removing the wheels.
“He was honored to do it,” Mamukelashvili said of Cabrera.
“He literally coordinated the crap out of it,” Cabrera said. “He had every security guard aware of it.”
In the locker room Wednesday night at halftime, Mamukelashvili swiped Castle’s keys. With the Spurs eventually sporting a comfortable lead in the second half, the backup forward/center from the Republic of Georgia then signaled to his girlfriend seated behind the bench to tell Cabrera and one of his employees to put the finishing touches on the elaborate operation in motion.
“It was a team effort,” Mamukelashvili said.
Castle’s reaction was caught on video by a few of his teammates.
“I guess he knew it was coming and I think he took it pretty well,” Mamukelashvili said. “Of course, he was a little upset, but I think it’s all love at the end of the day. I texted him yesterday to make sure he’s still good, and he threatened me again that he’ll do something to my car. But I think it’s a great way to kind of bring the team closer, kind of have fun a little bit.”

Now, Mamukelashvili has to worry about Castle having some fun of his own.
“Hopefully, my car is safe and it doesn’t get keyed or stolen or anything … maybe I’ll buy him like box of chocolate,” Mamukelashvili said.
