Wembanyama and Paul disqualified from Skills Challenge

San Antonio Spurs Center Victor Wembanyama competes during the skills challenge at the NBA basketball All-Star Saturday night festivities Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025, in San Francisco.
SAN FRANCISCO — Skills Challenge-gate had fans at Chase Center buzzing and, in many cases, booing.
Team Spurs’ bid to win the kickoff event at All-Star Saturday Night ended in controversy when officials disqualified Victor Wembanyama and Chris Paul for failing to take what officials called “valid shots.”
Team Cavs’ Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley claimed the title by besting Team Warriors’ Draymond Green and Moses Moody in the final round.
Team Spurs’ ouster came in the first round after Wembanyama tossed the balls at the basket rather than take aim with his shots.
The 7-foot-3 center said he devised the ill-fated strategy.
"I did,” Wembanyama said. “I don’t regret it. I think it was a good idea.”
The competition tasked players with performing a variety of skills, including different types of passes, shots from three spots and dribbling. The shots had to be put up from the corner over an automated defender, near the top of the arc and at the elbow, and the competitors were required to sink one or shoot three, whichever came first.
But rather than shoot conventional shots, Wembanyama quickly flipped his attempts toward the hoop to save time.
The strategy initially appeared to work after Team Spurs clocked a leading time of 47.9 seconds. But the NBA ruled it didn’t count because Wembanyama’s shots weren’t “valid.”
“We had the best time,” Wembanyama said. “Numbers speak for themselves.”
Paul argued with the officials, but the ruling stood.
“We tried something we thought could win,” Paul said. “To see if we had the best time, so … it was fun."
Paul said Wembanyama discussed the rules with the officials before the competition began.
“Before we went out, he was out there asking and they never said nothing,” Paul said.
Green backed up Paul, saying he heard the Frenchman ask officials if his strategy was within the rules.
"It definitely sucked to see them throwing the ball like that,” Green said. “But what I will say is Wemby walked around the court asking everybody, ‘Make one or three attempts?’ And Wemby said, ‘Oh, so I can get all three of them up there?’ So, he asked. Now, he may not have asked the right people. But I will say, in Wemby’s defense, he did ask a lot of people.”
Wembanyama was asked if he thought the disqualification was valid.
“I don’t know,” he said. “If the Challenge let’s us do that, there’s a loophole. It means we’re not a problem.”
Whatever the case was, many fans booed Team Spurs’ strategy.
“Booed? I don’t think I was. … I wasn’t booed. Chris was,” Wembanyama joked.
Asked if he may have outsmarted himself with the unconventional strategy, Wembanyama said, “It was a good strategy, but I don’t know. … It’s just not that big a deal.”
