There were hugs all around in the Spurs’ locker room Wednesday night. There were fist-bumps, well-wishes and good lucks.
On his way out the door, Victor Wembanyama graced teammate Sandro Mamukelashvili with the traditional Parisian double kiss on the cheek.
Not long after the Spurs’ 116-103 loss at Boston, Wembanyama and the rest of the team’s All-Star bound cohort rushed from the TD Garden to Logan Airport, where a late-night cross-country charter flight to San Francisco awaited.
“I never knew you could fly seven hours in the U.S. and still be in the U.S.,” Wembanyama mused. “Except maybe Miami to Anchorage.”
Wednesday’s red-eye marked the start of what should a busy, rest-free All-Star week for Wembanyama.
In addition to playing in his first All-Star tournament Sunday, Wembanyama is set to participate along with teammate Chris Paul in the Skills Challenge on Saturday.
He also had plans to watch rookie Stephon Castle compete in Friday’s Rising Stars game and Saturday’s slam dunk contest.
Paul, Castle, their families and selected team staffers accompanied Wembanyama on the flight to San Francisco, which he intended to spend teaching whoever wanted to learn about one of his favorite board games, a Risk-like affair called Small World.
“It’s a classic,” Wembanyama said.
While the Spurs’ All-Star center hurried out the door Wednesday in Boston, De’Aaron Fox took his time dressing slowly on the other side of the locker room.
The All-Star break is shaping up to be something different altogether for guard recently acquired from Sacramento.
“I’ll be in Houston,” Fox said. “I’ll be at home. I’m not doing anything.”
The past week has been a whirlwind for Fox, who was with the Kings in Oklahoma City when news of his trade went down Feb. 2.
At the time, the Spurs were in Memphis for the start of their rodeo trip. After a brief stopover in San Antonio for a physical, Fox joined his team for the second game of the trek in Atlanta.
He has been on the road ever since.
Part of Fox’s All-Star break will be about getting his new life set up in San Antonio, although he plans to supervise that project from his home in Houston.
“It’s a long process, finding a house and getting your cars out and trying to get your clothes,” Fox said. “We have people for that. So I won’t be doing it. I won’t even be thinking about moving.”
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, whose itinerary for the hiatus includes a trip with his family to Disneyland, said he hopes players will get whatever recharge they need from the time off.
Starting with the week leading to Christmas, the Spurs have played 17 of their past 24 games away from the Frost Bank Center, including a weeklong stint in Paris to face Indiana twice.
“We’ve had a hellacious run,” Johnson said. “I just hope everyone does what they need to do.”
The Spurs are not scheduled to reconvene until Feb. 19 in Austin, with a practice in advance of games Feb. 20 and 21 against Phoenix and Detroit at the Moody Center.
At 23-29, the Spurs will come out of the break and play six more games away from San Antonio before returning to their home floor March 2 against Oklahoma City.
As such, the pause came at a good time for players not headed to the Bay Area.
“It’s an honor and a privilege for the guys that get to go to All-Star weekend,” forward Harrison Barnes said. “At the same time, collectively, rest is a big thing for us. With the trade, with a long season, we hope guys come out of the break recharged.”
That could mean different things for different players, Johnson said.
“Some people need to get away from basketball,” Johnson said. “Some people need to sleep in. Some people need to have their peanut butter and jelly and not have to eat healthy.
“I hope they have safe travels, and when we get back to this thing it’s ripping and running.”
