ATLANTA — Devonte’ Graham’s unlikely record for most points in a Spurs debut remains safe.
De’Aaron Fox failed to eclipse the 31 points the journeyman scored in a double-overtime loss at Detroit in February 2023, but the Spurs had no complaints whatsoever about their newly acquired point guard’s debut performance.
Fox finished with 24 points and 13 assists as the Spurs survived a furious comeback bid by Atlanta from a 20-point first half deficit to down the Hawks 126-125 Wednesday night.
“Selfishly as a coach, I think that’s probably about as a complete of a game you’d hope for in a first game,” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “We saw the potential. It’s tantalizing. He’s dynamic. He’s going to unlock a whole different element for our team.”
Fox, who the Spurs acquired from Sacramento in a blockbuster three-team trade completed Monday, said the best is yet to come for him and his young teammates.
“When you have guys that are able to get downhill, create their own shot and also create for others, it makes the game so much easier,” he said. “And then all of us are athletic and long, where we’re able to get to the rim. And like I said, man, that’s why I think that this group could be special.”
The game-winning play underscored how special Fox and Victor Wembanyama can be playing together.
After Trae Young tied the score at 125-125 on a drive with 8.5 seconds left, Johnson designed a play during a timeout that called for Chris Paul to inbound the ball to Fox. Drawing a double-team immediately, Fox executed a perfect high pick-and-roll with Wembanyama that allowed the 21-year-old Frenchman to slice through the paint for a dunk attempt.
Fouled at the rim by Onyeka Okongwu, Wembanyama sank the first free throw to all but-clinch the win with 2.9 seconds left. Following an order from Johnson, he intentionally missed the second free throw to deny Atlanta the chance for an inbounds play.
Young’s desperation 3-point heave misfired, giving the Spurs the win in a game they desperately wanted because they own Atlanta’s unprotected 2025 first-round pick through the 2022 Dejounte Murray trade.
“Great play drawn by Mitch,” Wembanyama said. “I just wish I would have (gone) up with my right hand.”
Fox said he knew he would draw a double-team in that situation that would open things up for Wembanyama.
“Regardless of how well I’m playing in a game, I draw attention, and that’s what happened,” Fox said. "They put two on me, whether it was a miscommunication or that’s what they wanted to do, and (Wembanyama) rolled and tried to finish strong and got fouled.
“It’s funny, I told him in the time out, you had better not kick that ball out. We live or die by what you decide to do, and we definitely live or die by you taking that shot. You go to the basket strong, you get rewarded.”
Wembanyama finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds for his 23rd double-double of the season. He also had a block to give him a streak of 81 straight games with a block, which is tied for the sixth longest streak in NBA history.
Fox’s 13 assists were the most ever in a Spur debut. In a team-high 37 minutes, he hit 11 of 22 from the field, with his first field goal coming on a pull-up 3 from 25-feet out with 7:34 left in the first quarter on a feed from Paul
“When I came in, everybody told me to be myself, not to come in and just try to fit in, but the way that I play, I feel like I’m unselfish," Fox said.
Devin Vassell chipped in 20 points on 9-for-18 from the floor, and Paul had 11 points, including two big 3-pointers in the final 6:12, to go along with nine assists.
Young finished with 32 points for the Hawks (23-28). Okongwu had a season-best 30 points and 12 rebounds, and De’Andre Hunter finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
The victory raised the Spurs’ record to 22-26 after they collected win No. 22 last season in the season finale.
“This is factual progress,” Wembanyama said. “But I think those 20 wins should have come earlier. Every year we have to step up. Almost all of us are really young on the team, so there’s no other way than getting better and going up.”
With Fox on board, the Spurs’ rise should continue at a faster pace.
Here are three takeaways from the second game of a six-game trip for the Spurs before the All-Star break:
The Fox-Wembanyama on-court chemistry will come
Wembanyama and Fox didn’t produce many pick-and-roll points, but they’re going to come in bunches eventually.
“It’ll take some time,” Johnson said. “I don’t think it’ll be clunky because their skill sets are complementary, but I do think there’s a feeling out process, which we understand and will be patient with, to learn and have these guys maximize each other and the rest of their team as optimal as possible.”
Johnson also pointed out that, whether it be to pick-and-roll partner or schemes, Fox has always adjusted just fine.
“He’s been an elite player for a while,” Johnson said. “He’s played for a few different coaches. He’s played with a few different high-level players in terms of, I guess, you call running mates. He played with (Tyrese) Haliburton, another handler. He’s played with DeMar (DeRozan). He’s played with (Domantas) Sabonis. I think him and Victor will find the rhythm again.”
Considering the circumstances, Fox’s performance was pretty special
A 24-point, 13-assist double-double isn’t out of the ordinary for Fox. But for him to do it just days after a trade and without the benefit of a full practice with his new teammates, it’s a pretty remarkable outing.
But for the Spurs, it was exactly what they expected from the 27-year-old Houston native.
“When you know how to play, you fit right in,” Paul said.

Said Wembanyama, “A surprise for nobody. We all enjoyed it. He just brings a lot to the table for us.”
And it’s only going to get better, Paul said.
“The pace he plays with, the space that we have out there on the court,” Paul said. “He’s played with some really good centers, but I don’t think anybody like Vic that can open the court up like he can. And we ain’t even had a practice with him other than shootaround today. So, we are going to learn and figure it out as we go.”
It was a good night for Mitch Johnson
In addition to designing the play that led to Wembanyama’s clutch free throw, Johnson got credit for instructing Wembanyama to miss the second free throw on purpose to deny the Hawks’ an opportunity for an inbounds play.
The decision started with a group discussion between Johnson, Paul and Fox. But Johnson had the final call.
“Mitch brought a great point,” Paul said. “Whether you make it or miss it, it didn’t matter because it wasn’t like they were going to shoot a two.”
Indeed, the only shot left for Young to try after Wembanyama’s miss was a 45-foot prayer that badly missed its mark.
