CHARLOTTE, N.C. – De’Aaron Fox is getting an on-the-fly education in how to navigate the Spurs’ rodeo road trip.
“I had never heard of that,” the eighth-year star point guard said Wednesday night after amassing 24 points, 13 assists and three steals in his debut with the Spurs, a 126-125 win at Atlanta.
When Fox joined the team Monday after Sacramento traded him to the Spurs in a three-team deal, he had already been living out of a suitcase for quite a while.
“I was on the last day of a 13-day road trip,” he said. "I got traded and I was looking at the (Spurs schedule) and was like, what’s going on? And HB (Harrison Barnes) texts me, and he is like, ‘Well, we’re going to be on the road for the next month.’ "
The Spurs are in the midst of the first leg of their rodeo odyssey, which comes every February when the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo invades the Frost Bank Center.
Friday night’s game against the Hornets will mark the third outing in a six-game stretch that ends Feb. 12 in Boston. After the All-Star break, the Spurs play a pair of “home” games in Austin before going back on the road for the four-game second leg of the rodeo trip.
Fox won’t play his first real home game as a Spur until March 2 when the Spurs host Oklahoma City. But he sees a silver lining to the road-heavy schedule in that it gives him a chance to build off-the-court chemistry with his new teammates.
“Coming to a new team, I actually think it’s a little bit better because all you have is each other, so you’re able to go out to dinner and really be together,” he said. “You see each other pretty much every day on the road, so I think it helps build that chemistry a lot.”
Popovich’s plan praised after milestone win
Acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson paid tribute to Gregg Popovich after the team matched last season’s win total with the victory over the Hawks.
Johnson said the milestone the Spurs reached Wednesday underscored the patient, skip-no-steps approach to rebuilding the club championed by Popovich, who has been away from the team while recovering from the mild stroke he suffered Nov. 2.
“We talked about this two or three years ago, things that we were implementing and trying to put in, and we didn’t know when the wins were going to come and, at that time, not everyone’s paying attention, and that’s fine,” Johnson said. "But that’s how we’ve been trying to build a program, how Pop’s has been building a program for decades now.
“And, so, this is some of the (fruits of the) labor from two to three years ago, of the consistency and the habits of some of these guys, to see them now, Devin Vassell, Julian Champagnie, Keldon Johnson, Jeremy Sochan, et cetera, et cetera. It’s rewarding as a coach to see some of that.”
Star center Victor Wembanyama had mixed feelings about the accomplishment.
“This is factual progress, of course, but I think those 22 wins should have come earlier,” he said.
Wembanyama said he looks forward to the Spurs continuing to progress.
“Every year we have to step up,” he said. “Almost all of us are really young, so there is no other way than getting better and going up.”
Wembanyama getting over illness
Wembanyama said he thinks he’s well on the way to regaining full health after battling a cold for the past several days.
“I had very short breath (in Atlanta),” said Wembanyama, who had 24 points and 12 rebounds against the Hawks. “But I think it is over now. I think that tomorrow morning. I’m going to feel fine, so hopefully that was the last weird game.”
Wembanyama wasn’t the only Spur who played through some discomfort Wednesday.
The Spurs upgraded Chris Paul (sprained left index finger) from questionable to available after he warmed up and Fox played with a swollen thumb on his right, non-shooting hand.
Fox landed on the Kings injury report with a sprained right thumb after Denver’s Nikola Jokic hit his hand twice in a game Jan. 23.
Fox has also been dealing with an injured pinkie on his shooting hand all season. He also missed three games earlier this season with a glute contusion following a hard fall on a dunk attempt.
“My thumb is swollen right now, but it is what it is, man,” Fox said. “I played through those things, and I go out there and just try to help my team win.”
Spurs nab Patrick Baldwin from Bucks
Two hours before Thursday’s NBA trade deadline, the Spurs agreed to a trade with Milwaukee for forward Patrick Baldwin Jr.
The Spurs will also receive cash in the deal. Washington will get a protected future second-round pick as compensation.
It does not appear the journeyman forward is long for the roster in San Antonio. The Spurs intend to waive Baldwin, league sources say.
Baldwin came to the Bucks from as part of the deal that sent Khris Middleton to Washington and Kyle Kuzma to Milwaukee on Wednesday. Now he is likely on the move again.
The 6-foot-9 Baldwin, who is in his third NBA season, averaged 2.1 points in 22 games with the Wizards this season. He shot 52.4% from 3-point range, though in a rather limited sample size of 21 attempts.
Baldwin, 22, was originally drafted 28th overall by Golden State in 2022.
