评分:A

(Devin Vassell)

(Chris Paul)

(Harrison Barnes)

(Jeremy Sochan)

(Julian Champagnie)

(Keldon Johnson)

(Mitch Johnson)

Grades: San Antonio Spurs at Atlanta Hawks – Game #48

In De’Aaron Fox’s debut with his new team, the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Atlanta Hawks by a final score of 126-125. Fox hit the ground running for the good guys, who improved to 22-26 and got their first win of the Rodeo Road Trip.

With Fox leading the way, San Antonio was outstanding in the first half. The offense flowed beautifully and the defense was scrappy. At halftime, the Spurs had a 72-54 lead.

The second half wasn’t as aesthetically-pleasing, unfortunately. The Hawks put 43 points on the board in the third quarter and then San Antonio’s offense slowed to a crawl in the fourth period.

Thankfully, a Victor Wembanyama dunk with 30 seconds remaining and then a Wembanyama free throw with a couple seconds left ended up being just enough for the Spurs to capture the victory.

While their play was uneven, the Spurs have to be thrilled with how well Fox fit and the fact that they got a win.

Spurs at Hawks – Final Grades

Victor Wembanyama

Offensively, Wembanyama was uber efficient. He shot the ball well, got to the free throw line, found open teammates and only turned it over once. Even though he was battling through foul trouble, he put up an easy 24 points. While he was good on the boards on both ends, Wembanyama’s defense wasn’t quite as stingy as usual. His activity level waned at times but, all in all, it was another successful outing for the sophomore.

Grade: B+

De’Aaron Fox

It didn’t take Fox long to look like a natural in silver and black. He looked outstanding in the first half, scoring 18 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the floor. Although his scoring cooled in the second half, Fox’s passing was great the entire night. His court vision was better than advertised and he played with a combination of speed and patience that opened up opportunities for everyone. Fox’s defense was really good in the first half before slipping after halftime. Overall, Fox looked like a perfect scoring fit while also dropping 13 assists to only one turnover.

Grade: A

Devin Vassell

Vassell was able to slide into the role of a third scorer, which fits his skillset much better. He was able to be aggressive but he didn’t have to create as much for himself. The result was a pretty good shooting night and an uptick in quality passes. Vassell was also able to concentrate more on the defensive end, as evidenced by his four steals. He still has plenty of room to improve, specifically when it comes to making quick, accurate decisions.

Grade: B

Chris Paul

I was interested to see how Paul would fit in the starting lineup besides Fox … and it really looked like it will work going forward. While he handled the ball less than usual, his passing and playmaking were still very important. Paul posted nine assists and only one turnover while also being a shooting and scoring threat. His defense looked porous at times in the second half but it wasn’t for a lack of effort.

Grade: B+

Harrison Barnes

Good stuff out of Barnes. Although he only played 23 minutes, he was actively looking to make his mark on the offensive end. He knocked down a three and authored numerous fruitful drives to the cup. Defensively, Barnes was better than usual and he also got his hands dirty on the boards. On both sides of the ball, he also deserves credit for limiting his mistakes.

Grade: B+

Jeremy Sochan

Sochan did a lot of good against the Hawks. Defensively, he successfully guarded out on the perimeter in the toughest matchups and also scratched and clawed in the paint when needed. His rebounding could have been a bit better but I did like his physicality. Offensively, Sochan was a ball of electricity. He hit 7-of-8 shots from the field, with his only miss coming from three-point land. I liked his passing and his decision-making. Net-net, if the Spurs can get this version of Sochan off the bench on a consistent basis, they’d take it.

Grade: B+

Julian Champagnie

Champagnie’s defense definitely made a difference. In 22 minutes, he racked up five steals and a block. In recent games, Champagnie’s hustle has been at a higher level. On offense, there was some good and bad. He forced a couple shots but he also made a few smart passes. Shooting has been a struggle in recent games for Champagnie, as he has missed more than half his shots in five consecutive games.

Grade: B

Stephon Castle

The good: Castle’s passing and playmaking showed flashes of brilliance. There was a stretch where he looked like the best playmaker on the court. His athleticism also popped. Castle drove to the paint with moxie and got to the free throw line for six shots. The bad: Castle led the team in turnovers, didn’t play particularly good defense and missed both of his shots from three-point territory. The rookie also missed a couple easy shots at the rim that he usually makes.

Grade: B

Keldon Johnson

Johnson was strangely quiet in Atlanta. He played only 15 minutes and hit only one shot. His defense was also lacking and his trustworthy enthusiasm was missing in action.

Grade: C-

Mitch Johnson

Adding a new major piece like Fox on the fly isn’t simple to do for a coach, so Johnson deserves kudos for making it look easy. He let Fox be Fox and the results were fantastic. The playcalling down the stretch was good, Wembanyama got a lot of quality looks throughout and the bench produced well.
