Yesterday may have been one of the wildest days of news in NBA history. Thanks to the near-midnight trade of Luka Doncic to the Lakers for Anthony Davis on Saturday night, Sunday’s social media platforms and news outlets were dominated by reactions to arguably the most shocking trade in NBA history and one that will live in infamy for the Mavericks if Davis can’t help bring them a championship — or at least get them to the finals like Doncic did.
Then, just as the shock of that trade was dying down, the Spurs jumped into the headlines by acquiring De’Aaron Fox in a shockingly good deal that didn’t cost them a single member of their young core or their rights to the Hawks’ picks, which are suddenly even more valuable than before as that squad deals with season-ending injuries to key players. It was quite a day for the NBA, to the point that the games themselves hardly mattered.
Still, lost among the chaos was more Spurs news: Chris Paul will join Victor Wembaynama at All-Star Weekend in San Fransisco, and the two will compete in the Skills Challenge together. That’s on top of them already being well represented all three days, with Stephon Castle participating in the Rising Stars Challenge and Slam Dunk Contest, and Wemby (and possibly Castle if his Stars team wins) being in the All Star Game.

Hopefully this year’s Skills Challenge goes better for Wemby than it did last year, when he teamed with up Paolo Banchero and Anthony Edwards as part of “Team Top Picks”. Edwards did not take the challenge seriously, trying it entirely with his off hand and missing all the three-point attempts, leaving Wemby and Banchero visibly annoyed on the bench. Paul is a much more serious competitor and surely won’t hijack the competition for Wemby like Edwards did.
Obviously, this news is a blip on the radar for Spurs fans right now, but we will have more coverage of the Fox trade and of what else the Spurs could do before Thursday’s deadline coming up, so stay tuned!
